Spotlight Story: Avalanche Research & SLF
In a powerful demonstration of how Simcenter Physical Testing technology can have real-world impact, our Simcenter SCADAS RS systems are helping the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF) better understand avalanche dynamics and ultimately protect people and infrastructure.

  • SLF operates a full-scale avalanche test site in the Vallée de la Sionne (Arbaz, Switzerland), with sensor-instrumented obstacles like poles, walls, and wedges to measure forces, temperature, snow thickness, and avalanche speed.
  • Distributed Simcenter SCADAS RS units are connected by fiber‑optic links over hundreds of meters, synchronizing data across remote measurement locations.
  • When sensors detect the onset of an avalanche (on average 1–2 per week), data collection is triggered automatically, even from a centrally located room in Davos, which is much more accessible than the test site when covered in snow.
  • The vast amount of data is then used to calibrate and improve SLF’s simulation models, strengthening their ability to predict avalanche behavior.
  • These combined test-and-simulation workflows ultimately help SLF better protect communities and infrastructure in avalanche‑prone zones.

The ruggedness, high channel count, remote-access capability, and synchronization of our Simcenter SCADAS RS hardware make it uniquely suited to such extreme environments.
