July

June was a big month for Simcenter but July has been a big month for me. While I may have needed a well earned break, I was instead making my life more hectic by marrying outside of the country I live In. Since I didn’t create anything new this month lets check out what others have been working on.

Siemens and Bavarian State Opera develop digital twin for Bavaria’s National Theate

Have you ever wonder which is the best seat in the music hall? Well those working at the Bavarian State Opera no longer need to wonder, with their new Digital Twin they can find out. This is not the only user case for creating the digital twin, in fact it isn’t their reason for creating it at all. With this model they can now test to see how changing the orcastra setup will impact the final sound. If you want to know more take a look at our latest press release.

New Videos from Maya HTT

At Siemens we work with many partners, and for Simcenter 3D one of our biggest partners is Maya HTT. Recently they released a video that explains remote simulation and how to maximize compute use, leverage the best-in-class (according to them) HPC providers, and visualize the job in progress.

Then soon after they had their EMAG industry expert and ex- Simcenter 3D Electromagnetics Product Manager (PM), Adrian Perregaux give a technical webinar on how best to model the thermal behaviour of motors to ensure their performance. Since he was the PM for the initial release of Simcenter E-Machine Design it is perhaps no surprise that it is with this tool that the presentation starts, but it also includes Simcenter Amesim. If you like the video please take the time to like it and share it with others.

Astrolab

No longer do you need to be a state to reach space, nor do you need to be a huge enterprise to win state backed space contracts. All you need is Simcenter, or in the case of Astrolab we can be a little more procise and say all you need is NX, Teamcenter, and Simcenter 3D Space Systems Thermal.

Astrolab used the Siemens tools to design, test, and validate their concept for NASA’s next luna vehicle.

“Without an off-the-shelf tool like Simcenter 3D Space Systems Thermal, we wouldn’t have been able to validate our concept. Simcenter 3D Space Systems Thermal is a real game-changer for a small business like Astrolab and enables us to compete with much larger engineering companies.” – Paul Lees, Senior Mission integration Engineer, Astrolab.

Simcenter Prescan 2507

With this one I am taking advantage of the fact the no one checks what I upload here, since Simcenter Prescan is clearly not part of Simcenter 3D. However, it is my job to promote it and every engineer I have ever met likes seeing stuff that is just cool from an engineering perspective. Personally, I feel that updates to Simcenter Prescan meet that criteria, hopefully you like them too.

June

My Apolgy

To those of you that have been coming back in the last week of each month to ensure you are the first to get the update, I have to apologise. With the Combination of all the summer releases and attending realize live I was not able to find the time to make the update. I, also, wanted to do it after realize live so that you didn’t have to wait a whole month to get the news from Amsterdam, sorry.

Realize Live Europe 2025

With attendance up by 40% on last year it was clear that many engineers felt they had been sitting behind their screens for too long and wanted to meet their community, share ideas, and get reenergised. I almost feel dirty saying that last word, reenergised..eerr feels like something that HR would say. In this case, I think it is justified. As a researcher in a previous phase of my career, to me conferences, user groups, and even the best meetings share a commonality. The whole purpose of these activities is bring people together to share ideas, come up with new ideas, and to give that spark, inspiration, or kick up the rear end, which ever it is you need to get things moving at full throtal again. So lets take a look at what happened at Realize live in Amsterdam.

Like many of these big business events, the show starts in a posh hall for key note presentations, prize giving and other things the C-suite like to do. However, I was at realize live for the mechanical track.
The Mechanical products were well represented, so much so that there were some presentations that did not fit in the track and we had parrarel sessions.

Since I had the pleasure of introducing the speakers on the Mechanical track it was there that I found engineers far smarter than me, from whom I tried to absorb their genius and discover new ways of using the Simcenter solutions. We had people from wide range of industries and physics domains sharing the workflows they had come up with and the problems they had to overcome.

Its amazing where the crossovers come, engineers from ASML were talking to Bosch both of whom are transitioning from their previous processes to one that fully incorporates the NX, Simcenter 3D, TeamCeneter ecosystem. A big job at any company but especially for organisations as complex as these, that produce such complicated multiphysics products. Yet despite their differences it was clear that there was potential to learn from each other.

It wasn’t just the big brands playing a game of whos who, we also had student presentations, and introductions to university programs. One of my personal favorite presentations was from EMC FIME, an electric motor and fan manufacturer from the Ancona province in Italy. I admit, that this was in part because I have been in marketing for too long now and I am starting to like pretty pictures more than perhaps I should. However, it was also the comprehensive workflow they showed from designing the motor from emag simulations, to checking the acoustic effects of a tiny clip on the outter housing. They even checked the loading on that part when clipping it together.

It wasn’t just serious business, there was also the opportunity to let your hair down at a beach themed lakeside party complete with hawian shirts worn by many attendees.

I look forward to hopefully doing all again next year, I hope I see you there.

Realize Live Americas – June 2 -5, 2025

Simulation and test continue to get ever more integrated

If you can not place a sensor on the perfect location when instrumenting a physical test what would you do? How could you leverage the knowledge you gain from your digital twin models throughout the product lifecycle? These, and more, are problems that engineers are coming to us with and we group the products that tackle them as Simulation and Test integration solutions. One such product is Simcenter 3D Smart Virtual Sensing that Lab Motion Systems investigated in their case study. To see the full list of simulation and test integrated products in our new solution guide.

Structural Dynamics continues to update

As you may have noticed in recent editions, we have been trying to update all of the solution guides. Structural Dynaimcs is a little odd in this case, we have a new version as you can see via the link below, but we will likely be revisiting very soon. This is because as soon as we finished this version it became apparent that our developers had been working hard and already made it out of date. Please take a look to see a lot of what we can do, but also keep your eyes peeled for improved capabilities coming soon.

Assembly fem: Make the most of the latest updates

Marketeers will often overhype things, or use pretty colourful pictures to highlight a feature that is not actually that useful, just because the image was pretty. As am slowly learning to call myself a marketeer instead of an engineer I have to confess I have also done this. Its not entirely our fault, social websites push us to do these things. However, what do you do when developers create a tool that you know will help people a lot but it is not very exciting to look at? In this case, I hope that one of our experts makes a nice video explaining why this update is going to change the way your team will work and how it is going to make a difference.

Changes on Youtube

As always I have included some of the youtube links below, but I want to highlight some of the recent changes that our youtube team have working on. Firstly, they have significantly reduced the number of playlists we have and started using unofficial playlist via hashtags.
let’s take a look starting from the top. There is only one channel for all of the software tools at siemens simply called Siemens Software. On this channel there are many playlists, for us the key one is Mechanical, but you may also find the integrated solutions of interest particularly for those looking for information of optimization or AI, as well as the industry specific playlists that have high-level videos that explain how our products come together to solve problems throughout the entire vertical.
Finally, there are hashtags such as #hottosimcenter3d and #howtosimcenterfemap where our experts give you tips and tricks. Also, we have #whatsnewsimcenter where marketing teams across our products introduce the latest features.

Introducing Gear Design Optimization

The power of Simcenter truly comes to fruition when its many capabilities work together. For some time now gear engineers have enjoyed the wizard-like tool that is Simcenter 3D Motion Transmission Builder to quickly and reliably develop transmissions. This tool leverages the power of integration between Simcenter 3D and NX to automatically create gear designs and prepare sim files. However, if you wanted to conduct a DOE study or automate the design optimization process, you would require expert knowledge, a lot of time, and since there are so many parameters, a degree of luck to get it right the first time. As a result, a truly optimized transmission after full Multiphysics analysis was out of reach for most organizations. With the introduction of Simcenter 3D Motion Gear Design Optimization, much of the work is done for you making gear design optimization a relatively simple, quick, and reliable process. To better understand how it may impact your workflow see this blog  or to better understand how it works see its release blog

November 2024

In the first edition of this blog, we are able to look back a little further than the single month that future editions will be limited to and consider some of the bigger stories that have happened recently. None are bigger than the recent acquisition announcements, which, if completed, will include the largest single investment in the history of Siemens.

Acquisitions

This year has been busy. The acquisition of Zona Technology was finally completed, and the intended acquisition of Altair was announced. As a result, we can now complete aeroelasticity simulations at both subsonic and supersonic speeds. While, in the future, we hope that the almost perfect alignment of the Siemens and Altair products enables us to make more complete workflows possible in a single integrated environment.

Simcenter 3D Updates

Our existing packages have also seen key upgrades, such as the additive manufacturing voxel meshes, which make meshing not only simple but much more robust. We empower those developing electric vehicle solutions with the developments that better model bevel gear contacts, essential for making EV transmissions quieter. Then we released the brand new solution Simcenter E-Machine Design that merged the best of Simcenter SPEED and Simcenter Motorsolve to make one unified product that provides the best of both tools.

updates to Advanced powder bed fusion in both NX and Simcenter 3D.

This new tool will empower those developing motor solutions, such as axial flux machines for future electric vehicles, and provides Simcenter with unique modeling capabilities. This release captured the imagination of the press and has resulted in a number of magazine articles, such as e-Powertrain Technology and Magnetics Professional.

Where would you park your spacecraft?

Some of our latest simulations have been out of this world. In our latest blog, our engineers used NASA data to simulate the thermal environment of potential moon landing zones and asked, ‘Where would you park your spacecraft?’

Advancing bevel gear contacts

Bevel gears are essential to modern electric vehicle performance, but until now, modeling them has been complex.
