Happy Birthday
Creating 12 blogs, over the course of a year may have been a small goal but achieving any goal is an opportunity to celebrate, so I am going to. The wine is in the fridge, all I needed was cake! Perhaps, I thought, I can simulate it.
Now I have to admit something, while I have grown a grasp of what Simcenter 3D can do, I haven’t used it in anger at all. A year or so ago I did a few hours training but most of that info has long since left my mind. So as a birthday treat, I opened up the software and started clicking buttons.
They say given enough time, a monkey smashing a keyboard can write the complete works of shakespear. In this case, I think I may have been the monkey. However, this does at least prove that with practically no knowledge of operating the software, and having not used any CAD since my university days, it is possible for someone to open a CAD file in Simcenter 3D make a cake with a candle, even a twisty wick on top, and produce some kind of simulation in a few hours.
At one year in, I would like to thank all of you that have supported with feedback, sharing on social, or have allowed me to use your content. I hope you enjoy the result and are back again for the next update.
Astrolab prepare for the moon
“We used Simcenter 3D Space Systems Thermal to simulate how much energy FLEX consumes at different temperatures and in different configurations, as well as experimenting with multiple durations of hibernation,” says Paul Lees, senior mission integration engineer at Astrolab. “This enabled us to calculate exactly how much energy is needed to stay in darkness for 150 hours and informed decisions on sizing components and batteries.”

Maya HTT pinpoint high-impact parameters
Thermal model validation used to be a bottleneck that slowed your mission. In this webinar you can see how TMG correlation is used to make faster and more informed decisions.

Our partners at Maya HTT have been working hard to show you the possibilites available in simcenter 3D. In this short walkthrough, Florian Sanchez (Maya HTT) shows how an adjoint solver pinpoints high-impact parameters, compares model vs. test, and streamlines updates across complex mission profiles.
Realize Live 2026 – Speaker Program is now open!!
Did you miss out on Realize live 2025? Well you could catch up on some of the presentations here, or you can make sure you don’t miss out next year, by becoming one of our speakers.
Why should you be a speaker? well the website will tell you:
Showcase your expertise: position yourself as a technical innovator or thought leader to an audience of over 2,800 attendees.
Enhance your professional profile: play a vital role in promoting community learning.
Influence & inspire: directly impact the skills, strategies and success of your colleagues.
Unlock new opportunities: empower your peers, expand your network, and gain inspiration through direct feedback.
Complimentary access: gain full access to hundreds of sessions, hands-on training and invaluable networking opportunities — at no cost to you.
But as a slightly inteverted engineer, the reasons I would agree to present would be: Firstly to get me in to the event for free which would hopefully be enough to convince my manager to let me go. Secondly, to maximise my time while there. Since, I could spend a few days randomly approaching people hopeing to bumb into someone with the same interests or I can present and have people with the same interests seek me out. All you have to do is submit an application and hope to be accepted.
Submit for Amsterdam or Submit for Detroit.

Events
MAYA HTT – CAE Summit review
It was a beautiful October 8th in Florida, when engineering leaders and problem solvers assembled at the University of Central Florida for the CAE Summit, for a packed agenda. With presenters from Rolls-Royce gas turbines, Northrop Grumman, Lockhead Martin, and Siemens Energy, who presented on subjects ranging from design workflows of hydrogen powered aircraft to AI for predicitve maintenance in turbomachinery. As well as, Thermal structural analysis of a lunar rover and Steady-state modelling of a jet engine using ammonia as a fuel carrier.

We sent our resident Simcenter 3D experts Mark Lamping, Scott Hadley and Doug Wenk along to present and share knowledge and the feedback was fantastic. For example, in a discussion I had with Mark after the event he was telling me about his experience and what the customers were saying, One customer, that makes engines in the aerospace sector, said “I am dissappointed that I did not insisted on more of engineers attending, if the event is on again I’ll push more to come.” The customer went on, “I already have a direct report asking me how he can get the presentations from one of the sessions I attended.” Note to the reader, the customer did actually say that I could quote him directly but at siemens that requires a legal approval process, and there wasn’t time to do it before this blog was written, hence this paragraph lacking some va va voom, sorry.
Maya HTT are putting on some great events and the next one is coming soon. This Time they are focusing on Simulation and AI on November 4th in Coventry, The United Kingdom.

Volupe’s – Simcenter User Conference

Not to be outdone, Volupe also held a user group meeting this month, but after seeing their marketing campaign where their race driver found inventive places to give us a count down, and then reading the summary reports, I will be pushing my managemen to allow me to attend next year. From Aerodynamics at sea to the thermal management of rapid charging cables, and even the cooling strategies for data centers there was a diverse set of problems being solved and discussed in the presentations.

Get the full summary of the event here.
Short edition
I am currently pushing hard to have content ready for release deadlines, and I am cutting it fine. I am therefore, going to keep this edition short, but there are some great links this month to keep you occupied. See you next month, Jonathan.

The Future of Full Engine Dynamic Simulation for Gas Turbines
Baker Hughes (Italy) presented at the TurboExpo 2025 conference in Memphis.
They developed a new rotordynamic simulation approach to digitalize and integrate all rotordynamic analyses from conceptual to utilization product life phases.
In their paper, they reported a new technique that provided an efficiency gain while using Simcenter 3D on the NovaLT gas turbine verification and validation process. By adopting their approach the Simcenter 3D rotordynamic tool was able to prepare the model, apply boundary conditions & loads, run the simulation and export the optimized parameters.

Case Study: CargoKite use Simcenter 3D and Simcenter Star-CCM+ in their mission to beat shipping emissions
“Siemens Xcelerator is the most powerful package of software tools on the market for our purpose.”
– Giuseppe Musca, Head of Naval Architecture, CargoKite

We don’t merely put a kite on a ship, we are designing a new type of ship around the wind,” says Tim Linnenweber, co-founder and chief operating officer. “A kite-based propulsion system, a newly developed ship, and our intelligent control software make it possible to power our highly automated cargo vessels for the short sea and feeder market primarily by wind.” This facilitates transporting goods at the same or lower costs while reducing emissions up to 80 percent. Discover how Siemens software is helping them do this in this case study

Revolutionizing EV Drivetrain Design: Addressing NVH and Design complexity
The rapid adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs) marks a significant shift in automotive engineering, promising sustainable and efficient transportation. At the core of these vehicles are Electric Drive Units (EDUs), which, unlike their internal combustion engine counterparts, operate with minimal inherent noise. This intrinsic quietness brings the Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) performance of all other components, particularly the gear train, into sharp focus.

An introduction to the developments in Transmisson Builder and how it can be used to optimize NVH of EVs is given in this blog
AI-accelerated gear stress analysis
See how you can successfully integrate AI/ML surrogate models into gear design workflows to achieve both speed and accuracy in stress prediction. The AI/ML approach delivers results that closely match traditional nonlinear finite element analyses while being multiple orders of magnitude faster. This dramatic speed improvement, combined with maintained accuracy, opens new possibilities for comprehensive design space exploration and optimization of transmission systems.
