As machines and equipment are becoming much smarter, they increase in complexity, becoming lighter and more personalized to specific end-user needs. To exceed this competitive environment requires industrial machinery companies to adopt advanced design and simulation practices using Intelligent Performance Engineering (IPE). 

Advances in technology drive this process, encouraging companies to evaluate how to address customer needs and utilize digitalization. More flexible and complex machinery demands evaluating machine behaviors and performance, thus providing data back into the machine model and development process.

Basic simulation always reflects the interdependency of electromagnetic interference, structural loads, heat and vibration inclusively. Therefore, a design can be proven safe, but it may not explore the many engineering trade-offs’ in performance results. Thus, the designer can overcompensate with being too cautious, resulting in added weight, cost or reduced performance to meet safety requirements.

Advanced simulation experts can address some of these issues but are not familiar with the design criteria and goals at a granular level. This process results in delays and the risk of analyzing an outdated design, thus requiring designers to wait for the physical prototype testing phase to examine and validate the many aspects of the machine’s multi-domain performance. Then they must find and fix the problems at the prototype stage, which is expensive and time-consuming.
