Supercharge automation with Mendix

The industrial machinery industry has quickly taken to generative AI, using it to create tremendous value through simplifying coding, improving equipment maintenance and speeding up design workflows. Going into 2026, OEMs are hoping to integrate agentic AI to better automate their processes; and Mendix may be the right tool to help.

In the sixth episode of industrial machinery and AI series in Siemens’ Digital Transformation podcast, real world use cases for Mendix’s improved AI capabilities was discussed. Host Chris Pennington, global industry marketing leader for industrial machinery, along with Rahul Garg, Vice President for industrial machinery vertical software strategy, spoke with Subba Rao, Director, Manufacturing Industries Cloud, Siemens Digital Industry Software on the role of AI and digital transformation in industrial machinery. Their conversation focused on how manufacturers can use generative AI and Mendix to optimize engineering and design processes.

Strengthening the power of Gen AI

Generative AI is definitely indispensable when it comes to writing coding; but now, it’s capabilities reach far beyond just programming. Now, industrial manufacturers can use generative AI to generate meaningful feedback, leveraging it to measure characteristics like temperature thresholds and quality defects. When used in tandem with Mendix, generative AI can become even more supercharged.

Mendix enables generative AI-enabled solutions like Virtual Engineer to improve maintenance speed. Brazilian glass manufacturer Vivix leveraged Virtual Engineer to help inspectors to query production data, identify root causes and resolve issues more quickly. What used to take as long as days to address now can be fixed in less than an hour.

With generative AI as it’s partner, Mendix ensures governance and scalability across the entire business landscape. And its capabilities only grow when you introduce other enterprise applications and agentic AI into the equation.

Removing silos and empowering agents

Many enterprise applications work as a system of records. From ERP to PLM, these systems exist to maintain tight controls on the functioning of the organization. But inside those applications you still need the flexibility of having the information easily available. Mendix can augment existing ERP, PLM and other enterprise systems by removing the silos between each application—and without disrupting IT infrastructure.

Using Mendix, organizations can connect enterprise applications and create intelligent and practical infrastructure. And weaving these systems together lays the foundation for creating better AI agents. Leveraging agents within existing applications enables querying scorecards and timelines as well as reduces manual effort. What’s more, agents can increase automation in the organization through:

  • Creating alerts based on sensor data
  • Triggering maintenance tickets
  • Querying documentation to generate work instructions

Eventually, agents will be able to communicate with each other to enhance automation more than ever before. Agent orchestration remains a challenge to this however, as humans still need to oversee agent activity. Currently, Siemens is developing tools for agent orchestration through Mendix; emerging standards like model context protocol aim to simplify interoperability by becoming a sort of universal language for AI.

Creating a new standard

Mendix along with AI drive efficiency, flexibility and scalability in industrial workflows. Generative AI can become more than just a coding tool when used with Mendix, helping manufacturers gain more insight into their processes by synthesizing data. Not only that, Mendix enables organizations to take control of siloed data and create interconnect and intelligent systems. Harmonizing data across ERP and PLM applications also facilitates the introduction of agents and aids automation.

As the industry continues moving toward standardized agent communication protocols for seamless automation, Siemens works to strengthen Mendix so that it can integrate and orchestrate agents as well.
