Accelerate your Simcenter 3D Rotor Dynamics analysis

Leveraging HPC capabilities on AMD central processing units to improve rotor dynamics analysis

What is rotor dynamics analysis?

Turbomachine applications, from jet engines to industrial compressors, rely on rotating components operating at extreme speeds under demanding loads.  Small defects or damages in the structure can lead to vibration, instability, or catastrophic failure. Rotor dynamics analysis, a common application in the design of such machinery, plays an important role in ensuring reliability by identifying how shafts and rotating assemblies respond across the full operating range. By calculating critical rotational speeds, engineers can identify dangerous modes close to the operating speed range that could lead to resonance during operation, potentially amplifying vibration and threatening performance, safety, and asset life.

How do engineers conduct rotor dynamics analysis?

Simcenter 3D Rotor Dynamics (specifically, Simcenter Nastran SOL 414 solutions), a powerful solution within Siemens’ Simcenter suite, is designed to analyze vibrations in rotating machinery. It helps predict resonance phenomena at critical speeds, assess bearing loads, and evaluate system survivability across a wide range of operating conditions.  To speed up the simulation, the solution supports both Distributed Memory Parallel (DMP) and Shared Memory Parallel (SMP) processing.

How can high-powered computing speed up rotor dynamics analysis?

In this white paper, we explore and analyze various strategies to improve the efficiency of this analysis using High-Performance Computing (HPC) with DMP. In particular, we examine the potential performance gains offered by two distinct parallelization methods: distributing independent job steps across different processors or solving each individual step using multiple processors.   The release Simcenter 3D 2512 is used for this purpose.

Based on this HPC analysis, we will highlight best practices for engineers who use HPC in  Simcenter 3D rotor dynamics simulations.
