Multiplying the efficiency of designer CFD software

When we released Simcenter Flotherm 2019.2 and Simcenter Flotherm XT 2019.3 late last year something very important and unique didn’t get a lot of attention.

A lot of nice usability features did get attention of course. Plot locations linked to objects and maximum temperature, on-demand tabular data, full scripting extended to support post-processing, and many more. All good stuff, driven by customer feedback, making aspects of the software faster and easier to use.

What if there was a feature that could make the entire use of the software, not just some aspect of it like post-processing, many times faster? Sounds too good to be true doesn’t it.

Well there is. At least for some customers. For Chinese speaking customers in fact, and a significant benefit to any company with thermal design department in Greater China. In addition to having Japanese as a supported language, which has been available for a number of years, both Simcenter Flotherm and Simcenter Flotherm XT can now be installed and launched with a Simplified Chinese User Interface (UI).

Importance to Users

Designer-focussed tools in particular benefit from local language support for users whose first language is not English. Local language versions greatly speed up the time it takes for users to navigate through all aspects of the software. Imagine if software you are using had an interface in Chinese. How productive would you be?

Now, in Simcenter Flotherm Flexx, all menu items, drop down lists, and tool tips are translated. Translation does not affect the data or naming in the data model, so a model created with one language can be imported into a version using English or Japanese.

Importance to Companies

The ability to work with models regardless of the language of the UI used to create them is particularly critical in electronics thermal design, due to the often complex supply chains that exist, and the need for suppliers to share models with their customers to support the customer’s thermal design efforts. Using Simcenter Flotherm Flexx’s library capabilities, suppliers are able to provide models of package thermal models, fans, heatsinks, enclosures, or fully assembled PCB assemblies. Feel free to share with is your colleagues, particularly those in Greater China, who may appreciate the translation below:

I am a chartered chemical engineer working with computational fluid dynamics since the mid-1980s. I started at the world’s first commercial CFD company, then joined Flomerics as a spin-off start up before it was acquired by Mentor Graphics, and which is now part of Siemens. It has been a great career that continues to take me all over the world. I am passionate about engineering, and electronic products in particular, having been involved with electronics cooling since the early 1990s. Two aspects fascinate me: the ‘what’ done to improve the product during development, which today is enhancing the thermal digital twin; and the ‘how’ of improving productivity and workflow. Outside work one of my interests is my Caterham Seven sports car. They are almost infinitely configurable, so there is great scope to further improve the driving experience with aftermarket upgrades. So far the engine, suspension, wheels & tires have been upgraded. There are lots of minor things left to do including LED lights. Some things Caterham-related might just find their way into this blog.
