Industrial IoT: What do you do with all this data?

By Carly Cohen

The industrial Internet of Things (IoT) is connecting devices and expanding the boundaries of manufacturing into the digital world. Data is abundant and can quickly become overwhelming. In fact, according to a forecast by International Data Corporation (IDC)[1], by 2025 data collected by IoT devices is expected to reach 73 zettabytes (ZB) – most of that data coming from industrial IoT applications. But with emerging industrial IoT solutions, businesses now have greater opportunities to take advantage of industrial IoT data.

What can businesses do with all of their IoT data?

Businesses leverage industrial IoT analytics solutions to group, store and analyze the data they’ve gathered from their connected devices. From there, they can create new KPIs to help them make quicker, more informed decisions.

More specifically, common use cases include the ability to:

  • Monitor devices remotely with remote condition monitoring. Before the industrial IoT, gaining knowledge about a machine’s status and performance required a physical visit to collect basic operational information. Now you can procure detailed data about machine performance in real time and collect operational and performance data remotely – you can even perform some maintenance remotely and save a trip to your factory, reducing routine maintenance and travel costs.
  • Plan and optimize maintenance by leveraging performance data. Insights from IoT data can be used to plan maintenance and spot problems in the making, so you can provide solutions before an issue occurs. All of this data allows you to be more strategic and optimize operational efficiency, lowering costs and increasing production and performance.
  • Gather performance data from physical assets to create updated simulations. Find new ways to design, monitor and manage products by creating precise simulations. Then use these simulations to monitor and improve operations, evaluate what-if scenarios, and help improve the design of a device.
  • Optimize energy management and consumption. Access energy information and effectively analyze real-time data to extract key indicators and data about consumption needed to monitor energy usage. Analyzing this data can help detect abnormal energy consumption patterns and quantify energy efficiency gaps.
