How to develop hydrogen-powered aircraft

By Claire Cole

As the aviation industry works to become more sustainable, it’s crucial to develop new ways to power aircraft to reduce carbon emissions. While there are a number of sustainable aviation fuels under consideration, hydrogen is a key possibility. The two main routes for designing hydrogen-powered aircraft are to either use a hydrogen fuel cell or direct combustion in a gas turbine. Keep reading to learn more about each of these options.

Hydrogen fuel cell propulsion

In our recent webinar on hydrogen fuel cell propulsion, Stéphane Mouvand, aerospace business development manager for Simcenter system simulation at Siemens Digital Industries Software, compared these two architectures.

In that same webinar, Mouvand also talked through the hydrogen combustion concept. Watch the clip below to learn more.

Using simulation to develop a hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system

Finally, Tom Stokes, project engineer for analysis and simulation at Ricardo Ltd., shared how the team at Ricardo uses simulation to develop a hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system. The clip below gives a preview of Stokes’s presentation.
