The journey continues with Simcenter 3D Electromagnetics

By Chad Ghalamzan

Over the last 25 years, electromagnetic engineering has become central in the development of electronic, electrical and electromechanical devices and ultimately revolutionized the way we work, travel and communicate. It plays an essential role in the sustainable and connected world we live in. Its role will further increase and ultimately change the way we interact with products as well as dramatically improve energy efficiency.

Introducing Simcenter 3D Electromagnetics

The latest addition to the Simcenter 3D solution portfolio plays into what I just described. This new, yet thoroughly validated, solution covers the full frequency spectrum of electromagnetics:

    • Low Frequency: electromechanical devices such motors, actuators, transformers, loudspeakers and alike,
    • High-Frequency: electronic devices like antennas which are specifically producing electromagnetic waves to communicate

Multi-discipline & Digitial Twins

For simulating the performance of electromechanical devices, the aspect of multi-discipline is very crucial. The primary design goals of an electrical machine are mostly electromagnetic in nature such as torque, power, and efficiency. Yet the impact of the electromagnetic fields can easily affect other areas of physics, such as thermal, cooling, structural integrity, rotor dynamics, durability, vibrations and acoustics.

When engineers need to push the boundary and develop electric machines with, as an example, ultra-high power/weight ratio, then all core physics start to couple and these will impact key performances of the electric machine. Needless to mention that a multi-discipline approach is the best possible way to generate a high fidelity digital twin.  (I suggest you read the post on  Developing Novel Design Paradigms for Traction Motors using Simcenter Products if this topic interests you more)

Engineering for EMC

With the rise of variable speed drives, controlled by power electronics comes another issue: Electromagnetic Compatibility and Interference (EMC/EMI).  Unwanted, high frequency signals, resulting from the fast switching in the inverters, find their way into the electronics and could give rise to serious compatibility issues, causing product failure or worse. The need to engineer for EMC is likely to vastly increase.

By 2025, it is predicted there will be over 100 billion connected devices. Can you imagine an autonomous driving vehicle, hit by an electromagnetic wave, resulting in a fall-out of the crucial systems? With Simcenter 3D Electromagnetics, engineers can assess these EMC risks, avoiding catastrophic scenarios and ultimately guaranteeing a safe ride.

Simcenter 3D doesn’t do this for small electronic components only — on the contrary, entire system such as a complete vehicle, aircraft, vessel, satellite, HVAC unit and alike can be simulated. With Simcenter 3D Electromagnetics, engineers can assess compatibility up to the most sophisticated, large systems.

High fidelity simulations

Simcenter 3D Electromagnetics is built on several decades of profound expertise. With the acquisition of Infolytica back in 2017, and the swift path to the full integration of Infolytica Simcenter MAGNET into Simcenter 3D, we now provide a solution that fulfills the prime needs of the engineer: high fidelity simulations supported through a highly efficient process: A geometry-centric, multi-discipline engineering environment, enriched with best-in-class electromagnetic simulation technology.

Likewise, our solutions for antenna design, siting, EMC/EMI and alike are second to none and based on over 30 years of profound hands-on experience.

For Simcenter 3D, the journey continues and with the addition of Electromagnetics, it becomes that much more exciting.
