Able Innovations: Fighting Caregiver Burnout with Technology

By Pioneers Production Team

We live in a world where advancements in medical science have extended our lifespan and are transforming how we experience healthcare. People are living much, much longer than they did in the past, meaning they’ll need more care than ever before.

Trouble is on the horizon, though—population growth is below replacement, meaning we will not have enough healthcare workers to support our elderly population in the near future. In fact, this problem is already at our doorstep.

One study found that one-third of the surveyed healthcare workers plan to leave their jobs in the next year due to experiencing exhaustion, anxiety, and depression; a symptom of understaffed and overstretched healthcare providers. How can we meet the need, and preserve the health and dignity of our carers and their patients?

It’s time for tech to step in.

In this episode Kevin Blevins and Jim Gernatt interview Jay Singh, the CEO and founder of Able Innovations, a healthcare technology company.  Able Innovations’ ALTA platform is addressing a critical challenge in healthcare by making patient transfers safer and more efficient, benefiting both healthcare workers and patients.

In this conversation with Jay, you will gain valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities in healthcare innovation. You will also get to hear about a robotic device developed by Able Innovations, that allows a single caregiver to transfer a patient with the push of a button, providing a consistent and dignified experience for the patient.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode:

  • The problem of patient transfers in healthcare and the Alta platform (07:32)
  • Automating patient transfers using sensors and technology (09:41)
  • Safety and adoption of new technology in healthcare (16:06)
  • Medical technology and partnerships. (18:56)
  • Product development, commercialization, and company growth (27:34)

Jayiesh (Jay) Singh is an experienced entrepreneur who has spent over a decade on developing and commercializing mechatronic and robotic technologies. An Engineer by training, he has a passion for high-tech and high-impact technologies that provide a societal benefit. Jay’s exposure to the geriatric care environment from a young age has led him to seek solutions that can offer greater dignity and quality to our older adults and patients, while reducing burden and strain on caregivers. Now, Able Innovations is developing game-changing robotic technologies that have the potential to upend the status quo of patient transfers – the most labour-intensive task in healthcare. Able’s ALTA Platform™ is a first-of-its kind technology that automates transfers within healthcare facilities.

Able Innovations is using robotics to solve healthcare’s most labor-intensive tasks: patient transfer. Transferring patients is a physically demanding, injury prone and human resource intensive task which often requires 2-8 frontline staff to gather themselves in strenuous physical labor. This is not sustainable and is especially prevalent in healthcare facilities at a time where staff scarcity, burn out and injuries are at an all-time high. Able Innovations has developed an intelligent and automated robotic patient transfer technology, the ALTA Platform™, to conduct safe, effortless, and dignified patient handling that only requires a single operator.
