One Mountain. Two Seasons.
What the Zugspitze taught me about IT/OT convergence and why the digital thread is the path between them.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen sits at the foot of the Bavarian Alps, about 90 kilometres south of Munich. Two towns, two identities, forced into one in 1935. Even today, Garmisch feels modern and Partenkirchen feels historic. Same district. Different character. The tension between the two is right there in the name.
That tension is familiar to anyone working in industrial digitalisation.
The Mountain Above the Town.
The Zugspitze is Germany’s highest peak. At 2,962 metres, it sits on the border between Germany and Austria. You reach the summit by cog railway or cable car. The journey takes about 40 minutes. The world you arrive in feels nothing like the one you left.
But the mountain changes completely depending on when you go.
Summer on the Zugspitze.
In summer, the mountain opens up. Hiking trails connect the peaks. Alpine lakes catch the light. The Eibsee sits below the summit, one of Bavaria’s clearest and most photographed lakes. Visitors come to walk, to breathe the air, to see the view.
This is a world of planning, visibility, and long horizons. You see where you are going. You make decisions based on what you observe. The pace is deliberate.
Winter on the Zugspitze.
In winter, the same mountain becomes Germany’s only glacier ski area. Perfectly groomed runs. Tight tolerances. Speed, precision, and real-time execution. A skier on the Zugspitze is not thinking about the view. They are responding to the terrain in front of them, making split-second adjustments, keeping the line.
The mountain does not change. The demands placed on it do.
The IT Season.
IT operates in summer mode. Product data. Business intelligence. Cloud analytics. Dashboards that show what happened, what is happening, and what should happen next.
This layer knows what to build and how well it is being built. It plans. It observes. It sets direction. But it does not run the factory.
The OT Season.
OT operates in winter mode. Real-time control. Machines executing instructions. Physical processes running to tight tolerances and tighter schedules.
This layer executes. It does not care about cloud dashboards. It cares about whether the line stops or keeps running. Every decision is immediate. Every adjustment has a consequence.
The winter mountain does not need to become the summer mountain. It needs to be connected to it.
The Digital Thread.
This is where most conversations about IT/OT convergence go wrong. People focus on the technology and forget the data.
A digital thread is a continuous, connected flow of information that runs across the entire product lifecycle. From the first design decision, through engineering, into production, and back again. Every change, every quality result, every operational insight feeds back into the same connected picture.
Without a digital thread, IT and OT stay in separate seasons. Data sits in silos. Decisions get made on incomplete information. The gap between what was designed and what gets built widens quietly over time.
