Princess Yachts International plc case study summary
Find out how Princess Yachts International plc uses our software to keep up with growing demand, and build bigger and better boats. In this case study you’ll learn how they sped up production and maintained their attention to detail, which transformed their business.
Princess, a designer and manufacturer of motor yachts in Plymouth, England, is passionate about delivering consistently high levels of quality products for its loyal customers. To get the boats into the hands of customers on time, the company relies heavily upon NX for speed, efficiency and design freedom and upon Teamcenter to control information.
Princess was challenged by balancing attention to detail and delivering high quality levels with pressure to meet product delivery dates.
Princess realized that the only way to maintain a high rate of production and advance the highest standards of quality is to add robust and integrated CAD/CAM capabilities into their processes that would transform their business from design to delivery.
In addition to using NX CAD and Teamcenter to facilitate the design phases, Princess’s NC programmers use NX CAM to create and validate 5-axis operations needed to machine the complex geometry of plugs from which molds are made. Besides NC programs, NX CAM enables their engineers to generate complete work packages, including setup sheets and tool lists. When the mold is ready, resin infusion techniques are used to create a hull that is strong, light and thin, maximizing internal volume. Direct output from NX CAM to production machinery maintains precision, yet attention to detail is taken even further with the construction of a physical mockup so that subtle details can be verified and refined.
Through the use of Siemens’ NX and Teamcenter software solutions, Princess has increased efficiencies and innovation across all processes to speed up production. The company is now building bigger and better boats, bringing up to six new yacht designs into production each year, developing unique designs from re-use of library parts, and improving accuracy with advanced 5-axis machining methods.
