Don’t Lose, Reuse with Tecnomatix 9
The recently published Aberdeen study Assembly, CAM and Process Planning for the Modern Manufacturer finds that the Best-in-Class manufacturing companies are focused on productivity. Improving the manufacturing process planning by reapplying best practices is one of the keys to increase productivity.
This seems obvious as reusing proven manufacturing solutions is faster than reinventing the wheel all the time. Manufacturing companies already reuse resources and processes today. But how are they handling this? Here we need to get a closer look at the manufacturing process planning workflow.
Today manufacturing companies still use paper and pencil or more often Microsoft Excel. The manufacturing processes together with information about process time, required tools, parts which gets assembled and other data is filled in the columns. By using copy and paste between Excel sheets they reuse proven manufacturing processes and resources. For a one-man show, that’s sufficient, but for multiple manufacturing engineers involved in the planning process it gets complicated.
Another aspect which improves productivity is standardization of the manufacturing equipment and processes. Instead of each engineer choosing different resources like work tables, conveyors, screw drivers or any other equipment, a classified library of resources improves reuse. This is true for processes as well. Why not store manufacturing processes including the required resources in the context of a best-practice layout as well? BTW: standardization is one key element of lean manufacturing.
Tecnomatix 9 provides a solution which enables manufacturing engineers to classify, manage and reuse proven best-practices of resources and processes. All this in a collaborative environment based on the Teamcenter platform.
