We’re halfway through the MindSphere Future World Series at Expo 2020 Dubai, but we’re not slowing down!
With over 200 participants, including different nations, multilateral organizations, businesses and educational institutions, Expo 2020 Dubai connects communities from around the world to share ideas and work together. As part of this initiative, the MindSphere Future World Series welcomes collaborators to join us in our continued efforts to evolve, improve and innovate the Smart City.
Hackathons are a big part of the MindSphere Future World Series. We gather teams focused on creating innovative IoT solutions to tackle challenges that fall within the big five topics of the Expo: Buildings, Energy, Mobility, Industry and Water. The first three hackathons – Buildings, Energy and Mobility – were successfully completed. Read on to learn about the winning solutions created by the pioneering teams. But first, let’s look at what’s still to come.
Upcoming hackathon challenges
In February, we will continue with two parallel hackathons, both tackling the topic of Industry:
- Future Industry Hack: Open challenge for industrial IoT solutions. Teams will be using both MindSphere and Mendix to develop their apps. Learn more.
- MHP Future Factory Hack: Co-hosted challenge with MHP – A Porsche Company, focusing on the jointly developed digital twin for production. Learn more.

March includes a hackathon around Water, as well as another Mobility challenge focused on Transportation.
- Future Water Hack: Challenge to develop solutions to help the water industry continue their distribution of economical and efficient water supplies. Learn more.
- Mastercard Future Transportation Hack: Participants will create IoT solutions for different methods of transportation: it must calculate carbon emissions and recommend the most eco-friendly routes – all in one application. Learn more.

Congratulations to the Building, Energy and Mobility hackathon winners
We’re delighted to celebrate the success of the following winners of the MindSphere Future World Series hackathons. These participants created innovative solutions to create a better future, together.
Future Building Hack
Fusebox connects smart infrastructure with energy markets. Numerous smaller consumers and generators are gathered together as a single energy consumer through a Virtual Power Plant (VPP). This enables consumers to reduce individual costs, and in addition makes the electricity grid more efficient and carbon neutral.
The Fusebox application bridges energy markets and smart buildings in the Siemens MindSphere ecosystem. With this solution, both new and existing MindSphere customers, such as commercial and retail buildings, industrial buildings, energy storage devices, EV charging stations, etc., can unlock the benefits of the Fusebox demand response service by connecting to the Fusebox consumption management and balancing platform in a simplified way.

Future Energy Hack
Ekkono is a Swedish software company that provides machine learning – not just inference – at the edge. Ekkono’s edge machine learning software runs onboard machines, vehicles and more – enabling smart, self-learning and predictive features.
Ekkono conceived an incremental learning solution for a smart and energy-efficient indoor climate controller. Their solution demonstrates how Ekkono’s edge machine learning software complements MindSphere and opens up the possibility of comprehensive maintenance and optimization solutions.

Future Mobility Hack
Exomotion is on a mission to enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities by providing robotic transportation services in indoor environments such as airports and hospitals.
Exomotion’s hackathon solution connects their innovative wheelchair to MindSphere. Using MindSphere as their main cloud solution for monitoring and managing devices, they can use IoT sensors and actuators in the environment to safely navigate passengers with reduced mobility through airports.
What’s next at the Future World Series
We will continue the success of the hackathons with the Industry hackathon in February and the Water hackathon in March. Open innovation is an important part of the collaboration process for Siemens and the industrial IoT sector. We look forward to future collaborations and can’t wait to see what you create.
