Learn how Siemens is helping students design a more sustainable future
Engineering students and professionals alike are craving education on sustainable design practices. These learners are keenly aware that in order to create a more sustainable, economically successful and stable future, radical changes in product and packaging design are needed.
To address this challenge, Siemens Digital Industries Software is proud to offer several exciting courses on Coursera aimed at equipping learners with the skills needed for sustainable design.
Additionally, Siemens and Sony are now challenging students worldwide to imagine sustainable design with immersive engineering – read on to find out more.
Take a look at two of our most exciting courses available now.
Learn about sustainability and the circular economy in this course from Siemens and CU Boulder
This course is the first in a nine-course series on incorporating sustainability in technical management. The first three courses are already live. Learners can earn a digital badge for completion of each course, and a microcredential for completing the entire series.
By attending this course, learners gain the strategies and tools needed to integrate sustainability into their daily life and the companies where they work.
It also introduces students to the idea of the circular economy, which is an innovative way of decoupling economic growth from traditional resource extraction.

Learn the essentials of engineering and part design in Siemens NX, a key tool for sustainability
Siemens NX software is a powerful integration of CAD and CAM solutions. By downloading and using NX CAD/CAM Student Edition, students can learn how to use powerful features like NX sustainability impact analysis used by professional engineers at leading organizations.
If you’re a student or professional looking to quickly learn how to get the most from NX, be sure to take the Intro to Siemens NX course on Coursera. In this course, you’ll learn how to create a drawing from a part model, analyze and compare techniques of assembly modeling and apply designs to real-world scenarios and tasks.
Participate in our Immersive Design Challenge by sharing how you would make a product more sustainable
Last but not least, Siemens and Sony are partnering to challenge students worldwide to imagine sustainable design with immersive engineering.
Specifically, the first round of the challenge is for you and your team to pitch an idea for how you would use immersive design to make a product of your choice more sustainable.
Teams must both:
- Include three to five students, with at least one team member skilled in using CAD or NX
- And be comprised of students who are enrolled in a bachelor’s, master’s or PhD program of any discipline through March 2025
This challenge offers participants an excellent opportunity to develop practical sustainability skills and network with design professionals around the world.
Select teams will get the chance to work with Siemens mentors to develop their designs, and the finalists will be among the first in the world to use the Sony XR head-mounted display and NX Immersive Designer.
Additionally, the winning team will take home a Sony XR head-mounted display and a one-year NX Immersive Designer license for their university.
Submissions close on December 20, 2024. Assemble your team today, start brainstorming ideas and submit your idea before the deadline.
