After winning 3rd place in 2021, the Siemens-supported student competition team, Baqu4 of Hanyang University-Erica Campus, received 2nd place in the Korean SAE competition in the Baja/Formula/EV category. Organized by the Korean Society of Automotive Engineers, the Korean SAE Competition has helped grow and foster the next generation of engineers for over ten years. During the competition, students can plan, design, and build off-road vehicles for Baja and on-road vehicles for Formula and Electric Vehicles. These student competitions provide valuable experiences and opportunities for future engineering leaders!

Baqu4 Team

Members of the Baqu4 team consist of Mechanical Engineering students of Hanyang University-Erica Campus who are passionate about automotive engineering. The association was founded in 1999 by Professor Lee Ki Hyung. Since then, the teams have continuously improved their vehicle performance in various competitions. Like many other student teams, the opportunity to participate in the contest provides pivot experiences for Hanyang University Engineering students.

Academic Partnership

Over the years, Siemens has partnered with many universities worldwide to help support education. In 2020, Hanyang University-Seoul Campus and Siemens Digital Industries Software signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Hanyang University’s Seoul Campus to provide resources for young, talented professionals. Siemens Korea team is planning to expand the education MoU with Hanyang University-Erica Campus in 2023. These MoUs demonstrate Siemens’ commitment to creating a platform for future engineers.

In 2022, university partner Hanyang University developed and used Siemens Digital Industries Software solutions to create innovative manufacturing courses that offer online and offline training programs. Through industry methods, Siemens and the university help enrolled students build on existing skills, sharpen their knowledge, and bridge the gap between industry and academia. These courses help students better apply the industry-required knowledge and skills learned in the classroom.

Another critical aspect of supporting student innovation is investing in student-led teams. These student competition teams allow young engineers to apply what they learn in class to real-world projects. Students are in charge of everything from prototyping to making business decisions like budgets and sponsorship recruitments. Siemens supports numerous teams, including Hanyang University’s Baqu4 student team.

Specifically, the members of the Baqu4 team used Simcenter STAR-CCM+, Siemens computational fluid dynamic software, and NX Academic, Siemens solution to realize the value of digital twin, to better understand model flaws and enhance their model designs.

“Thanks to Siemens’ grant of Simcenter STAR-CCM+, we were able to design the vehicle’s aerodynamics devices. Furthermore, through CFD analysis, we found the target values and evidence.”
