Turning “Ugly” Gerbers into intelligent SMT Manufacturing data

In today’s SMT manufacturing environment, production efficiency depends heavily on the quality of input data. But what happens when that data is incomplete, outdated, or simply unusable?

For many manufacturers, this is a daily reality, especially when working with legacy PCB designs created years (or even decades) ago.

The challenge: when PCB data slows down production

Recently, a manufacturer faced this exact challenge. Their Gerber files were more than 20 years old, incomplete, inconsistently drawn, and missing critical elements like centroid data.

As a result, production teams had to rely on manual processes:

  • Manually placing and soldering components
  • Interpreting unclear pad structures
  • Resolving inconsistencies directly on the shop floor

This significantly slowed down SMT programming and introduced a high risk of errors and rework.

From raw Gerber files to manufacturing-ready data

Using Process Preparation X, the team was able to transform these fragmented Gerber files into structured, usable manufacturing data.

Even with missing inputs, advanced data interpretation, including layer analysis and silkscreen recognition, enabled reconstruction of component placements and orientations with high accuracy.

This allowed the creation of a usable BOM, enriched with manufacturer data and linked to the Valor Parts Library (VPL).

Enabling automated SMT and PCB programming

With structured data in place, the manufacturer could move from manual processes to automated PCB programming and SMT programming.

This enabled:

  • Automated pick-and-place machine programming
  • Standardized workflows across production
  • Reduced dependency on manual interpretation

What started as unusable “ugly” Gerber data became a fully functional, production-ready dataset.

Why This Matters for Modern Electronics Manufacturing

In surface mount technology, manufacturers can no longer depend on perfect design inputs.

They need solutions that can intelligently process, interpret, and prepare manufacturing data, even when it is incomplete or inconsistent.

Process Preparation X provides this capability by combining structured process engineering with intelligent data handling, enabling faster preparation and more reliable outcomes.

From “Ugly” to Intelligent Manufacturing

This transformation shows what is possible when manufacturers move from reactive, manual workflows to intelligent process preparation.

It’s not just about fixing bad data, it’s about unlocking scalable, automated production from even the most challenging inputs. 👉 Learn more about Process Preparation
