Perkins Engines Adopts Virtual Simulation and Process Planning Yielding Big Dividends

By Stephanie Aldrete

Overview:

Perkins Engines Company Limited, the leading supplier of gas and diesel engines, achieves great product quality, reduced time to market, and cost savings, using Siemen’s Teamcenter and Tecnomatix including FactoryCAD, Jack, and Plant Simulation Software.

The Challenge:

Perkins needed to eliminate late-stage changes to expensive tooling and production processes and to reduce the risk of escalating costs and disruption to production schedules.

The Epiphany:

Perkins’ manufacturing engineers learned that with Siemens’ solutions, before any new engine configuration ever goes near a production line, the engine will be assembled on the production line in the right sequence, enabling assessment of all necessary tooling requirements before launch.

The Execution:

Working in the Teamcenter manufacturing environment and using Siemens’ Tecnomatix software, the manufacturing engineers model the production facilities in detail, creating and sharing a tessellated model of the factory. Perkins has developed a working mathematical model using Plant Simulation discrete-event simulation for process optimization.

The Results:

Perkins has seen a significant value in terms of both financial return and time saved, higher product quality, and further value in achieving seamless integration with shop floor systems.
