APS software vs. other solutions

By Jason Meyers

Manufacturers without APS software have found varying degrees of success with different operation management systems and other pieces of software not designed for advanced planning and scheduling.

Spreadsheets and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems are the two most commonly used solutions, but they still lack many of the features APS software provides.

For example, spreadsheets can’t provide any kind of scenario analysis regarding trends and fluctuating sales.

Additionally, working in a spreadsheet is labor-intensive, and it can take hours or even days to create a production schedule depending on the number of inputs.

ERP tools could be considered a step up from spreadsheets, but it still falls short of a complete APS system.

Many ERP systems ignore any type of resource management, prediction capability or capacity utilization.
