Be Ready for the Future: How Software (ALM) and Product (PLM) Development Platforms Will Support the Internet of Things (IoT)

By rizzos

Following up our presentation during this year’s Embedded World, let’s investigate how the Internet of Things (IoT) has increased the need for better integration between Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) solutions and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) platforms.

For the past twenty years, the management of product development and software development processes has been growing apart. As a result, ALM and PLM solutions primarily exist today in parallel silos in the product development world and are not well integrated. On its own, the PLM platform does not sufficiently cover the needs of IoT, where software is an ever-increasing component of physical products from which markets demand mass customization and enormous variants, all of which must be managed somehow and with improvements delivered continuously. In the context of the product manufacturing process, traditional PLM systems struggle with the management of software and its own complex development process. Software exists at a much deeper level and has its own distinct lifecycle, which is not fully addressed by PLM solutions.

Our presentation at Embedded World 2015 built a business case for a greater integration between ALM and PLM and outlines a vision, strategy, and roadmap for achieving a unified solution for managing the development of products and software in order to survive and thrive with IoT.
