Mapvision delivers absolute inline measurements using 3D CAD reference parts with Siemens Iray+

By SilviaP

The automotive industry around the world is in a flux with faster product cycles, smaller series and the transition to electric vehicles made of new kind of components. It is more important than ever to be able to use the data from inline measurement systems directly to adjust the production and to ensure that only green parts are delivered.

Mapvision inline measurement systems are based on a patented multi-camera technology which measures part dimensions from images. Traditionally, real parts measured with slow and tactile CMM-machines have been used as reference.

Mapvision has digitalized yet another mechanical task by replacing the reference part with a digital version, the CAD model.

A 3D CAD model serves as the perfect reference, as it precisely represents the intended design of a part. The virtual realm is the only place where a part can truly exist in its ideal, nominal state.

The primary challenge when comparing features from real-world photos to synthetic references is ensuring that the 3D CAD model appears realistic enough to allow for accurate, measurement-level assessments.

Achieving realistic lighting in CAD-generated images is key to realism. For many scenarios, basic image rendering techniques, like rasterization, can provide adequate simulated lighting.

However, for a fully realistic experience – complete with shadows, secondary reflections, and other details – a more advanced ray tracing approach is required.

Mapvision have therefore decided to partner with Siemens Iray+ technology to re-create the reference part as a realistic digital twin in the simulator.

Siemens Iray+ Software Developer Kit (SDK) enables highly performant photorealistic rendering in 3D software applications, with minimal integration effort.

Mapvision’s Editor Suite, powered by Siemens’s Iray+ technology, lets the user re-create reality as a photo-realistic digital twin in the simulator.

Embedding Iray+ into Mapvision Editor Suite has allowed to achieve superior quality rendering of 3D CAD models, that can be confidently used for reference measurements. Iray+ excels in the physically accurate modeling of the illumination and the object materials, a core functionality of Mapvision Absolute Measurement, to ensure quick and accurate programming of Mapvision Q- and F-Series systems.

This grants unprecedented flexibility to change the reference part or introduce variants quickly and reliably. With Mapvision Absolute Measurement, the traditional CMM-based workflows, that can take days or weeks to accomplish, are reduced and replaced by a real time measure-analyze-adjust loop. Powering this productivity leap is the ability to render realistically with Iray+ which is integrated to Mapvision Editor Suite.
