What’s new in NX | December 2024 | Immersive Engineering

A new year, a new raft of game changing capabilities within NX™ software! We’ll be bringing you several blogs between now and June that focus on the December 2024 release of NX. In today’s blog, we’ll be taking at look at Immersive Engineering, and how we’ve been taking things up a notch. Let’s start with our existing Immersive solution; Immersive Explorer.

Immersive Explorer

As a reminder, Immersive Explorer is a one click instant design review tool, enabling you to iterate faster and reduce reworks within an immersive environment. If you missed some of our released content through 2024 on Immersive Explorer, take a look below 👇

New updates to Immersive Explorer

We’ve been working hard to bring an alternative approach to working within Immersive Explorer. With desktop mode, you can now interact with your model without the need for a headset. You’ll be able to enter the virtual environment and navigate around your model via your monitor to gain additional insights on your design. Desktop shortcuts give you the control you need so you have an alternative way of interacting with your data.

What’s more, we’ve added embedded support for the Sony Head-mounted display, whilst also re-working the tablet menu based on feedback from you. This is an important thing to consider for out next Immersive update…

Immersive Designer

Immersive Explorer was just the start; with the latest release of NX, we’re incredibly excited to announce Immersive Designer is now available on the market. With NX Immersive Designer, you can begin to experience 3D CAD within the industrial metaverse. Design whilst you work at your own desk, with your model on your own table.

Sony Head-mounted display

This is all made possible through the exclusive partnership with Sony, marrying NX Immersive Designer with the Sony XR Head-mounted display; the SRH-S1.

This game changing collaboration is the most natural way to experience your digital twin; We’re enabling you to move beyond today’s limitations and create products for the future. Here’s how:

Create with precision

You can experience fully featured NX in high-fidelity 3D that supports traditional mouse and keyboard inputs. You’ll be able to design in-context with a fully immersive, infinite canvas; and this is where the boundaries become blurred between your real and digital world.

Ideate in high fidelity

The Sony XR Head-mounted display boasts industry leading features, ensuring you have unparalleled levels of creation. The OLED microdisplay delivers 4K resolution per aye, all powered with the Qualcomm Snapdragon® XR2+ Gen 2 chip. What’s more, the headset comes equipped with revolutionary controllers to give you an intuitive experience when interacting with and editing your data.

Work comfortably

One of the key priorities behind development of the headset was to ensure comfort wasn’t a limiting factor to your immersive creation. So, there’s an optimal front/back weight balancing and special forehead cushioning to reduce neck strain, and a flip-up visor to make it easier to multi-task when creating in NX.

Video see-through (VST functionality)

Flexibility for the way you design is paramount. The video see-through functionality gives you the power to design and collaborate between worlds. Integrated X2 RGB cameras enable you to see objects in your physical surroundings, creating a truly borderless experience.

Accessing Immersive Designer through Value Based Licensing

NX X Immersive Designer is available through Value Based Licensing; our flexible and cost effective method to run additional NX add-on modules. Check out the blog to learn more about Value Based Licensing, and how you can integrate into your workflows.

NX X Immersive Collaborator

One of the real strengths with Immersive Engineering for the December 2024 release is the ability to collaborate with colleagues; this is where Immersive Collaborator comes into the equation. With Immersive Collaborator, you can design together with colleagues in a completely virtual meeting room to discover new workflows, whilst allowing other stakeholders to watch the sessions and gain deeper insights.

Once the host as set up the virtual workspace, you’ll be able to make design changes, markup models to capture design intent, and save versions to review at a later date. It’s a new way of working, and another instance of blurring the boundary between the physical and digital world.

* Immersive Collaborator can only be accessed through NX X.

Immersive visualization

Companies around the globe continue to be even more demanding when it comes to visualization. With that in mind, we’re continuing to bring solutions that enable smarter, faster and more cost-effective decision making. After all, immersive visualization is for anyone, across any domain.

With the December 2024 release, we’ve focused on performance optimization for the Ray-Traced studio in NX. When you create a ray traced rendering of your part, NX will use a lightweight version, representing this part to improve loading times. The result? Less time wasted on setup and more time focused on product refinement.
