An immersive an hands-on learning experience (by Guillermo Nieves)

My internship with Siemens Energy & Utilities has been an immersive learning experience, allowing me to work hands-on with many of Siemens’ leading programs and conduct research for future technological investments. Perhaps best of all, I was able to network and learn from industry leaders of today and those of tomorrow.

It all began with Mendix software

When my internship began, the first assignment given to our group was to get certified in Mendix, as this would become the basis of my real project, a Service Lifecycle Management (SLM) app.

After achieving the Mendix intermediate certification, my partner Jarret and I began our real journey with Siemens, designing a tool used to streamline the way we track, manage, and optimize service requests, asset conditions, and resource allocation within Siemens operations.

During my time on the project, I utilized Mendix’s page editor and responsive layouts to craft a user-friendly homepage that provided quick and intuitive access to each module within the app. I focused on building a clear navigation structure, tailoring menus and interface elements based on user roles.

A wonderful internship filled with learning, networking and brainstorming

The networking component of my Siemens internship was nothing short of remarkable and truly amplified the entire experience. At the Houston office, I was welcomed into a vibrant, collaborative environment where I learned firsthand how much you can grow simply by being surrounded by passionate professionals. Whether it was participating in brainstorming sessions, or grabbing coffee with colleagues, I gained so much from the informal and formal exchanges that fuel Siemens’ innovative culture every day.

Overall, I am deeply grateful to Siemens and Mr. Nixon for entrusting me with both hands-on project responsibilities and high-impact research, while also supporting me as I built lasting connections with incredible people throughout the company and industry. This opportunity has not only fueled my professional growth but also reinforced my passion and hunger for further challenges in the intersection of technology, collaboration, and innovation. I leave this experience inspired, energized, and ready for whatever comes next.
