Digitalization as the connective tissue: Siemens Mobility on shaping the future of resilient, data-driven inbound logistics

Greater supply chain resilience often starts with a simple question: how quickly can logistics teams sense, respond and adapt to disruption? For Nick Corley, Head of Logistics for Siemens Mobility North America, digitalization is no longer just an enabler – it has become the essential connective layer linking suppliers, internal partners and manufacturing operations into a unified ecosystem.

Corley describes this digital backbone as providing a 360-degree view of the supply chain, supporting faster decision-making and more synchronized execution. These capabilities have grown increasingly critical amid capacity constraints, port delays and global volatility.

Turning data into operational advantage

A central element of Siemens Mobility’s approach is Siemens’ digital logistics platform AX4. Corley explains that AX4 serves as a foundation for:

  • Managing inbound transportation across plants
  • Controlling carrier networks and high-level logistics costs
  • Generating new data sets for continuous improvement

These insights have become a catalyst for broader strategic measures – from streamlined supplier onboarding to improved transparency across the inbound supply chain. Suppliers, he notes, have offered positive feedback, highlighting more efficient workflows and clearer shipping processes.

From centralized support to scalable collaboration

Traditional, centralized logistics support models were no longer sustainable for Siemens Mobility’s expanding U.S. manufacturing footprint. The visibility delivered by AX4 now enables teams to collaborate more effectively with internal customers and build scalable processes aligned with long-term growth.

Sustainability built into every logistics decision

Sustainability is embedded into Siemens Mobility’s logistics strategy. Corley highlights two key measures:

  • Intermodal transportation, reducing reliance on long-haul trucking while lowering emissions and costs
  • Domestic consolidation, enabled by AX4 data, optimizing freight flows and minimizing environmental impact

“We build trains via trains,” Corley notes – capturing the company’s commitment to sustainable logistics within a business focused on sustainable transportation solutions.

Lessons for organizations navigating today’s logistics challenges

For companies facing ongoing supply chain uncertainty, Corley’s guidance is straightforward: inject digitalization early and often. Digital tools strengthen communication, enhance agility, and improve responsiveness to disruption. As he describes it, digitalization is the “connective tissue” that enables cross-functional alignment and more resilient operations.
