Watch our on-demand webinar and learn how students and early-career engineers can stand out in the job market

Looking for your first internship or job out of college can feel overwhelming — especially when no one hands you a roadmap for today’s competitive job market.

What do you actually need on your resume? How do you make your interview responses stand out? And what are recruiters and hiring managers really thinking on the other side of the table?

In this on-demand webinar featuring real questions from real students and job-seeking engineers, two Siemens professionals offered candid advice on what it takes to land an engineering role today.

Julian Jaeger is an engineering manager at Siemens Mobility with nearly two decades of experience. Across that time, he’s worked in development engineering, project management, product/portfolio management and more, offering him a rich viewpoint on what engineering hiring managers look for in recent graduates.

Jess Naab is the Global Head of University Relations & Talent Programs at Siemens Digital Industries Software. As the leader of a global team that recruits students and recent grads into internships and early-career roles, she knows the hurdles of landing a new internship or job and knows what makes for a great resume, profile and interview.

With respective experience in recruiting and hiring, Julian and Jess offered a well-rounded perspective on how students and early-career engineers can stand out in today’s job market.

A sneak peek at what you’ll learn

Tip #1: Your GPA isn’t everything.

“You spend so much of your time in your undergraduate courses really refining and working on your technical skills,” says Jess, “but the hiring process is about so much more. It really does emphasize and look for students that have strong communication and collaboration skills.”

Jess shares more about why adaptability is so important for today’s engineering roles:

Tip #2: Don’t just say you did something — show your impact.

“Your resume should not say, ‘I was part of this team,’” Julian explains. “Your resume should say, ‘I was part of the team and we achieved 10% cost savings.’ Show me the results — not just that you were part of the team.”

Julian shares some tips on crafting an impactful resume:

Tip #3: Adaptability matters more than you think.

“Especially working in a large corporation, things can change quickly,” Jess notes. “Priorities within a project, scope of a project, customers, working team, staffing situation… things can change very rapidly. Being able to adapt to those new situations is very important.”

Whether you’re polishing your resume, prepping for interviews or still figuring out what job you want after graduation, this session is packed with insights that can help you jumpstart a thriving career in engineering.
