Introducing Expedite – Skills for Industry: a new microcredential for early-career engineers

The engineering skills gap is widening.
According to a 2023 report from the Boston Consulting Group and SAE International, one in every three engineering roles will remain unfilled through at least 2030 – and the demand for engineering skills is simultaneously increasing.
Many new engineers are finding it difficult to differentiate themselves in the job market. Meanwhile, employers are struggling to find candidates with the right mix of skills to add value on day one.
That’s why Siemens created Expedite – Skills for Industry, an forthcoming microcredential designed to give early-career engineers marketable skills like product lifecycle management, sustainable engineering, durable skills and more.
You can now pre-enroll for a two-week free trial of our new microcredential Expedite – Skills for Industry. If you’re a student, register now before July 31st to take advantage of this offer yourself and learn how engineering concepts are applied at leading industrial organizations today. Educators can also register to explore how this microcredential allows students to prepare for the workforce and add marketable skills to their resume.
Complementing traditional engineering programs with in-demand skills
Expedite – Skills for Industry is a four-course microcredential designed for engineering students and early-career engineers.
It’s the first microcredential of its kind that bolsters both engineers’ digital skill set and digital mindset, allowing them to demonstrate their ability to succeed from day one on the job.
Through Expedite – Skills for Industry, learners connect what they’ve learned in the classroom with real-world experiences focused on product lifecycle management, emerging applications of AI, the digital twin, sustainable engineering and the internet of things.
This microcredential also bolsters critical durable skills like cross-disciplinary collaboration, project management, business processes and solutions and risk management.
How it works
All four courses in Expedite – Skills for Industry are self-paced and will be accessible within the Coursera learning ecosystem. Upon completing the microcredential, students will receive a verifiable digital badge to display on their portfolio and social profiles to attract recruiters and inform hiring managers.
Finally, by accepting the badge and opting into Credly’s Talent Directory, learners can be easily found by employers searching for their blend of technical and durable skills.
Siemens is addressing the engineering skills gap with a growing credential program
Expedite – Skills for Industry is just one part of Siemens’ broader efforts to bridge the engineering skills gap with credentials.
Recently, Design for the Circular Economy, our microcredential created in collaboration with the University of Colorado Boulder, became the first ever industry credential to be recognized by ABET.
This milestone underscores not only our commitment to industry-relevant credentials that meet ABET’s rigorous quality-assurance standards, but Siemens’ leadership in engineering credentialing writ large.
