What’s New in Opcenter Research, Development and Laboratory 2604

Strengthening usability, data governance, and operational confidence across R&D and laboratory workflows

What This Release Delivers

Opcenter Research, Development and Laboratory (RD&L) 2604 is a unified platform for managing laboratory, formulation, specification, and product development processes. This release focuses on improving everyday usability, strengthening master data governance, and enhancing laboratory execution and planning.

Delivered as part of the Siemens Xcelerator™ portfolio, Opcenter RD&L 2604 helps organizations operate more consistently across global R&D and laboratory environments, improve knowledge and IP management and support more efficient, predictable product development and testing activities.

Benefits

• Improve usability and efficiency through targeted UX refinements
• Strengthen data quality and control for ERP and enterprise integrations
• Reduce risk and rework with enhanced Bill of Material governance
• Accelerate laboratory operations with flexible, performance‑optimized test assignment
• Improve planning accuracy through improved APS standard integration
• Maintain compliance and traceability without disrupting existing processes

This release delivers enhancements across General, Specification Management, and Laboratory capabilities. For the full list of enhancements see Opcenter Research, Development and Laboratory V2604 Release Notes.

Capabilities

General Improvements

Opcenter RD&L 2604 introduces user experience refinements designed to improve consistency and usability while aligning with Siemens UX standards.

Key updates include:

  • Navigation icons for user profile, settings, and application information
  • Enhanced notification, warning, and error message handling
  • Expanded filtering capabilities, including column filtering for sub‑levels
  • Enhanced Pricebook search and usability

These improvements help users focus on their work while reducing the effort required to manage system feedback and complex data lists.

Specification Management Enhancements

Stronger Master Data Integration with ERP

This release introduces significant improvements to ensure only valid, reliable data is exchanged with ERP systems.

Enhancements include:

  • Active and inactive states added to material properties
  • Introduction of location source for plants, distinguishing RD&L‑created locations from externally sourced locations
  • Validation rules that prevent Bills of Material from being exchanged with ERP when materials, plants, or links are inactive or unknown

Additional checks are executed when creating, saving, or submitting Bills of Material. Warnings and errors clearly identify issues such as inactive components or missing approved versions, helping users correct problems earlier in the process.

Together, these changes strengthen data governance and reduce the risk of invalid or incomplete data being propagated downstream.

Laboratory Enhancements

Enhanced Assign Full Test Plan

The Assign Full Test Plan (AFTP) functionality has been redesigned to improve performance, flexibility, and consistency.

Updates include:

  • A new two‑tab structure with Assign and optional Assignment Details
  • Backward compatibility with existing assignment workflows
  • Filtering by parameter profile, parameter, and method, with remembered filter settings
  • The ability to adjust assignments across multiple samples, particularly valuable in R&D laboratory environments

These enhancements make test plan assignment faster and more adaptable to real‑world laboratory operations.

APS Integration Updates

Opcenter RD&L 2604 strengthens its Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS) integration to improve planning accuracy and lifecycle alignment. These enhancements improve coordination between laboratory execution and planning, enabling more reliable scheduling outcomes.
