Breakout Session: Latest in Multi-Axis Machining

Multi-axis machining has grown increasingly capable over the years. Widely used for applications in aerospace and medical industries, 5-axis machining has been increasingly used by mold and die makers, enabling them to accelerate machining of complex parts in hard materials, while achieving mirror finish.

Learn how NX CAM’s advanced multi-axis machining capabilities will make you more competitive. Streamlined 5-axis programming, new cutting strategies, and support for barrel-shaped tools can dramatically expand your machine shop capabilities to take on a wider range of jobs, while reducing your production cost per part. Join this session to learn how to leverage the latest 5-axis capabilities in NX CAM for your applications.

Learning Objectives:

  • Increase productivity and proficiency with current/future software

  • Learn new and exciting product features

  • Optimize the use of existing software

Presenters: Jay Grubbs, Hendrick Motorsports; Michael Taesch, Director NX CAM Software, Siemens Digital Industries

Date: Monday, June 10, 11:15am – 12:00pm, Room 334

Demonstration: Unleash your automation with NX CAM Robotics

With the fast expansion of robotic usage on the shop floor, NX CAM users can use their CAM software to program both machine tools and robots. You can control robots to perform various tasks, such as pick and place, machining, drilling, hardening and additive manufacturing. Get a glimpse at what’s coming next!

Learning Objectives:

  • Increase productivity and proficiency with current/future software

  • Identify solutions to meet business challenges

  • Analyze current industry trends that will impact the future

Presenters: Ryan Glogowski, Bachelor in Aeronautical Engineering, 4D Systems; Michael Taesch, Director NX CAM Software, Siemens Digital Industries

Date: Monday, June 10, 2:45pm – 3:30pm, Room 335

Tuesday, June 11

Demonstration: 5-Axis Machining – CAD, CAM and CNC

Complex 5 axis machining requires starting with useable geometry, generating effective tool path, and managing how the machine controller handles it. We will discuss typical issues found in aerospace geometry and how to deal with these anomalies. Advanced mathematical functions available in modern controllers and how to use them to solve part positioning errors, adaptive machining, axis cross over errors and surface finish issues will be discussed. Examples of effective integration between NX CAM and SINUMERIK 840d will be presented.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will gain knowledge of what it takes to solve issues while machining complex aerospace components.

  • We will demonstrate a use case where issues in CAD, CAM, CNC and Inspection contributed to a single problem.

  • Upon completion, participants will have a better understanding of how 5 axis tool paths are created in the CAM system and how they are handled at the machine.

Presenters: Edwin Gasparraj, Principal Consultant, SIXDIGMA LLC

Date: Tuesday, June 11, 11:15am – 12:00pm, Room 334

Demonstration: Aerospace Tool Path Techniques

This session will discuss theory, tips, and tricks for applying NX CAM tool path to difficult to machine Aerospace components. Topic points will include adaptive milling, high-feed face milling, trochoidal turning, prime turning, turbo machinery milling, turn-milling, and 5-axis tool path techniques.

Learning Objectives:

  • Increase productivity and proficiency with current/future software

  • Optimize the use of existing software

  • Learn new and exciting product features

Presenter: Tom Funke, CAM & Applications Engineer, Sandvik Coromant

Date: Thursday, June 12, 11:15am – 12:00pm, Room 334

Demonstration: Machine Smarter with Barrel-Shaped Cutting Tools

Learn about the advantages that the new barrel-shaped tools provide. Using NX CAM, you can program jobs using barrel tools to dramatically reduce your machining time, while improving the surface finish. Specifically designed for five-axis milling, barrel-shaped tools allow a large cutting contact with the workpiece. This will enable you to achieve the desired finish quality with significantly fewer passes. Join this session to see how NX CAM provides an easy way to take advantage of these innovative cutting tools in your machine shop!

Learning Objectives:

  • Bring awareness and clarity to business challenges

  • Increase productivity and proficiency with current/future software

Presenters:  Michael Taesch, Director NX CAM Software, Siemens Digital Industries; Mathieu Tapp, MBA, CEO at Fraisa USA Inc.

Date: Thursday, June 13, 1:30pm – 2:15pm, Room 334
