Paper: The Benefits of PLM-based CAPA Software

Having released a milestone application in February of this year (see the Press Release and blog post on Issue Management and CAPA on Teamcenter) for corrective and preventative processes on a PLM platform, we’ve been very pleased with the reception by the marketplace and many customers.

In fact, if you’re a manufacturer in automotive, aerospace/defense, industrial equipment, electronics, medical devices or any other discrete industry, the evidence is becoming clear that you will benefit from an integrated PLM-based CAPA solution.  According to Matthew Littlefield, President of LNS Research, “While EQMS functionalities such as CAPA can be delivered as a standalone solution, because of engineering-intensive organizations’ existing investments in PLM, it is often strategically optimal to implement EQMS functionalities as an extension of the PLM platform.”  (Read his entire blog post here).

He’s right, particularly when you consider the top three benefits of a PLM-based CAPA solution:
1) CAPA processes become a part of your new product development and launch business operations providing a standard, consistent interpretation and response when non-conformances occur
2) Safety and quality characteristics, defined early in a product’s lifecycle, can be monitored for early preventative actions, effectively mitigating the risk of corrective actions and
3) The scope of an enterprise PLM solution touches each of the critical control points required of a CAPA solution:
        a. Design
        b. Production/Process
        c. Records/Documentation
        d. Materials
        e. Facilities & Equipment

While I’ve blogged and written about this topic in the past, (see my article on QualityDigest), I think you will find more recent research from LNS Research to be a very interesting analysis of the benefits of PLM-based CAPA software (click the image):
