Siemens is bringing Immersive Engineering to the industrial metaverse

Imagine a world where the lines between physical and digital reality are blurred — where businesses can interact with digital replicas of their physical machinery and environments, collecting data and enacting change in real time. This concept is already a reality, and it’s called the industrial metaverse.

As CES 2024 approaches next week, we are excited to share how Siemens is contributing new technologies, including mixed reality, to the industrial metaverse. Businesses across all industries are already adopting and leveraging its capabilities, making it a significant step in the future of manufacturing and design.

According to Deloitte, 92 percent of surveyed executives said their companies are “experimenting with or implementing at least one metaverse-related use case and, on average, they are currently running more than six.”

Technologies such as the digital twin, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing are some of the standard building blocks of the industrial metaverse, and they enable the most impactful use cases today, including:

  • Factory and process simulation
  • Real-time monitoring
  • Quality control
  • Supply chain management

Seeing the bigger picture

Having this level of visibility and control over internal processes enables businesses to overcome challenges and fix potential issues before they arise — leading to better business outcomes and, ultimately, better outcomes for the planet.

The industrial metaverse will be a place where we innovate at the speed of software. It will offer enormous potential to transform our economies and industries.

By 2030, the metaverse is expected to be worth trillions of dollars in market value. Industrial applications will comprise a significant share of the overall market, especially as sustainability and digital transformation remain high priorities for businesses in every industry.

The technologies enabled by the industrial metaverse will support the innovation of better products, meanwhile making it easier to reduce carbon emissions, waste, and energy consumption. As businesses gain the visibility needed to lightweight their products and become more energy efficient, sustainability and decarbonization are within closer reach than ever.

In addition, product designs will be developed more quickly and efficiently, allowing companies to save time and money while optimizing their processes.

By leveraging the capabilities of these new technologies, businesses will have the power to become more competitive while resolving both internal challenges and real-world problems — including sustainability.

This is just the beginning of the industrial metaverse’s potential.

How Siemens is bringing Immersive Engineering to the industrial metaverse

In 2023, Siemens introduced a new dimension to the industrial metaverse: Immersive Engineering.

As the next step in the future of design, Immersive Engineering transcends traditional 2D practices by leveraging mixed reality. This enables a fully integrated, user-centric virtual space — effectively combining the physical and digital worlds.

With the all-new NX Immersive Explorer software from Siemens, users will begin to enjoy the benefits of Immersive Engineering by exploring the right designs before committing to physical prototyping.

In a fully immersive environment, users can interact with every single part of a design model while experiencing the true scale of the object. They can grab, select, hide, view, rotate or scale any part and view cross sections of their designs to better understand internal configurations.

In addition, users can view their designs from any angle with the freedom to change the scenery as needed — allowing them to view their designs in a variety of real-world scenarios.

To enable more comprehensive design reviews, NX Immersive Explorer also enables users to take accurate measurements, draw annotations, add sticky notes, and capture snapshots. This ultimately empowers better communication of ideas across functions to arrive at the best design iterations.
