How I used Mendix to empower HR teams (By Jacob White)

During my internship at Siemens, I contributed to the development of a workforce management application utilizing Mendix, Siemens’ low-code platform. This app streamlines shift planning, skill mapping, time and attendance tracking, and resource allocation for Siemens’ dynamic project environment.

My focus area was the Smart Scheduling Interface, HR Dashboard, and Employee Dashboard.

An app with many functionalities for HR personel

I worked closely on integrating core HR functionalities that empower representatives to manage and allocate employee training programs efficiently. HR personnel can now simply assign workers to role-based upskilling opportunities and track employee development in various specializations.

Among the best features is the ability to upload professional certifications onto a profile. This combines industry credential management – like AWS Certified Welder, OSHA 10/30, NCCER Pipefitting, ASME B31.3 Process Piping, SA Certified Control Systems Technician, and more, making it is much simpler for HR personnel and managers to track workforce credentials and assign workers to jobs requiring those credentials.

I also worked on a Smart Scheduling Interface that takes employee availability data, along with any active time-off requests, to automatically schedule employees for shifts. In the Smart Scheduling Interface, you can select how many employees you need at a time, as well as specific skills and/or certification qualifications an employee may need. For the time-off request interface, an employee enters what days or what time of day they are requesting time off for, and then a manager is required to approve or deny the request before scheduling.

A valuable internship with collaboration and learning

Collaborating with the Siemens team, including guidance from my mentor John Nixon, provided invaluable experience in both low-code enterprise application design and strategic research.

The combined exposure to practical solutions, building an application in Mendix, and exploring Siemens’ digitalization roadmap has shaped me both professionally and technically. I’m grateful for this opportunity and excited to apply these skills in my future career.
