FSMA 204 readiness: turning traceability into operational resilience
The next food recall should not become a search for disconnected data.
FSMA 204 readiness starts with knowing how quickly your organization can respond to a food safety issue. Manufacturers must quickly determine where an affected ingredient came from, where it went and which products and customers are at risk. When that information is fragmented across suppliers, plants and systems, every hour spent reconciling data can widen the operational and commercial impact.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Food Traceability Rule, which implements Section 204 of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), establishes additional traceability recordkeeping requirements for certain foods. Covered organizations must maintain key data elements associated with critical tracking events. They must also make requested records available to the FDA within 24 hours, unless the agency agrees to another reasonable timeframe.
Although the FDA will not enforce the rule before July 20, 2028, food industry leaders have good reason to assess their traceability capabilities now. Connecting data across internal operations and external partners requires planning, alignment and time.
Beyond compliance: why connected traceability matters
FSMA 204 readiness requires organizations to use traceability data to coordinate their response to food safety issues. Operational readiness depends on whether the organization can:
• Establish the origin and movement of affected materials
• Determine which products and customers may be affected
• Coordinate a targeted recall across internal operations and external partners
Maintaining the required records does not automatically provide the visibility needed to coordinate a recall. Manufacturers also need to connect information about materials, production batches, quality and logistics across the supply network.
From raw material intake to the final consumer package, connected traceability provides an end-to-end view of product genealogy and helps manufacturers assess the scope of a quality issue.
Faster access to reliable information can significantly reduce investigation time, enabling manufacturers to identify affected products sooner and conduct more targeted recalls rather than broad withdrawals. This speed and precision can limit unnecessary stock losses and help prevent contaminated products from reaching shelves. It also helps manufacturers show which products are not affected.
Building resilience through trusted traceability
Siemens helps Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) connect traceability information across materials, production, quality and supply chain operations. The goal is to provide decision-makers with trusted product genealogy and the visibility needed to respond quickly when quality or safety issues arise.
Siemens Xcelerator portfolio capabilities, combined with Trusted Traceability, a blockchain-based traceability solution powered by dimax.cloud, support secure cross-company information sharing, alerts and targeted recall workflows.
This combination supports FSMA 204 readiness through connected, automated and audit-ready digital records, helping manufacturers prepare for evolving food safety requirements.
The operational benefits extend beyond recall response. Digital manufacturing records can reduce the time and costs associated with manual recordkeeping and data reconciliation. Greater visibility into raw material origins helps manufacturers evaluate alternative suppliers or ingredients while maintaining product genealogy and quality standards.
Assess your traceability readiness
Preparing for FSMA 204 can help manufacturers identify gaps in their traceability processes before a recall occurs.
If a recall happened tomorrow, how quickly could you prove what is affected and, equally important, what is not?
Assess your FSMA 204 readiness now: identify traceability gaps, test recall-response processes and determine where disconnected data could delay action. Connect with Siemens to evaluate your current approach and identify improvements that support trusted, end-to-end traceability.
