Siemens supports Kookmin University to host autonomous vehicle student competition

Kookmin University hosted the 2024 Autonomous Driving Simulation Contest in South Korea, supported by Siemens Digital Industries Software’s Global Academic Program and channel partner Work On Simulation (WOS).

Students from the department of electronic engineering at the university leveraged Siemens’ Simcenter Prescan Solution, a cutting-edge autonomous driving simulation tool, to develop and test their self-driving algorithms in a simulated environment.

Simcenter Prescan is widely adopted in the autonomous driving industry to create realistic 3D models of complex traffic environments and conduct real-time scenario testing.

During the competition, 25 students competed by applying their custom-developed algorithms to a virtual track, assessing autonomous vehicles’ ability to navigate and respond to various driving conditions. The competition also included simulations of unexpected situations to test how well the algorithms could handle unforeseen challenges.

On June 25, 2024, the awards ceremony was attended by Vice President Kim Hyung-jin of Kookmin University, CEO Young-shin Lee of WOS, and Professor Gu-min Jeong of the department of electronic engineering, who presented prizes to the successful students.

This collaboration between Siemens and Kookmin University has been ongoing since 2021, focusing on the use of Siemens’ Simcenter portfolio to support academic initiatives.

CEO of Work On Simulation Young-shin Lee commented on the relevance of Simcenter Prescan in the automobile industry.

“As the autonomous driving market continues to grow, the role of simulation tools like Prescan is becoming increasingly important. These tools help minimize the risk of accidents by allowing us to model and test various unexpected scenarios,” he said. “We look forward to expanding this competition in the future and hope to see more Kookmin University students participate.”

Professor Gu-min Jeong added, “Our lab is currently engaged in autonomous driving projects with industry leaders like Hyundai Motor Company and NIPA, utilizing Siemens’ tools. We believe that the practical experience gained through these simulations will be invaluable to our students as they prepare for careers in the industry.”
