High-octane skills development: What industry can learn from Formula Student competitions

When it comes to real-world engineering experience for students, it’s hard to beat Formula Student. Formula Student is a student-led motorsport engineering competition where universities worldwide compete against one another for various awards.

It’s an exciting environment for students to not only engage in high-octane competition, but also to gain practical skills for careers in motorsports and the automotive industry.

In her session at Realize LIVE Europe, Heidi Daouk, CEO of the Formula Student team CAT-Racing, will share the innovation and insights she’s seen firsthand in this unique environment.

Taking place at Transformation Stage 1 at 12:00 PM CEST, this session will dive into the unique practices employed by these student-led teams and what the industry can learn from them.

A small-scale replication of a full Formula One team

In a nutshell, a Formula Student team is everything you’d expect from a Formula One team, but on a smaller scale.

Student teams design and build high-performance formula-style race cars, starting anew each season. In addition, they manage the finances, infrastructure and growth of the team.

The competition has been held annually since 1998, and today, over 100 university teams take part every year.

More than just an engineering competition

By participating in Formula Student, students learn a range of valuable skills. From practical engineering experience to soft skills like business planning, project management, budgeting, presentation and teamwork, there’s no shortage of opportunities to learn key skills for making an impact in industry roles.

In brief, this competition provides a pool of uniquely enthusiastic, skilled and experienced candidates for the automotive industry. To learn more about how manufacturers can bridge the skills gap, click here to learn about a new credentialing program offered by Siemens.
