{"id":6835,"date":"2012-10-31T16:15:21","date_gmt":"2012-10-31T23:15:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.mentor.com\/verificationhorizons\/?p=6835"},"modified":"2026-03-27T08:43:34","modified_gmt":"2026-03-27T12:43:34","slug":"iot-internet-of-things","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/verificationhorizons\/2012\/10\/31\/iot-internet-of-things\/","title":{"rendered":"IoT: Internet of Things"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Ready for 100 billion \u201cthings\u201d connected by the Internet?<\/h3>\n<p>The IEEE Standards Association (SA) Corporate Advisory Group (CAG) has been working to bring industry input into the standards development organization on the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) trend that will connect billions of devices with each other.<\/p>\n<p>As you can imagine, the impact this will have to the service structure down to the development of connected devices will have impact on tools used to create, verify and test them from the EDA industry to the protocols that will need to be in place to facilitate this.<\/p>\n<p>This past summer the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onem2m.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">oneM2M<\/a> was launched to bring some groups together who were dedicated to product technical specification for the M2M Service Layer.\u00a0 The impact on the IEEE, that is responsible for ongoing Internet standardization, is likewise large and not totally known.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lYby-9uI-_c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 0px 5px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;float: right;padding-top: 0px;border-width: 0px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2012\/10\/Segars-ARM-Techcon-Presentation-sml.jpg\" alt=\"Segars ARM Techcon Presentation sml\" width=\"329\" height=\"142\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>I was reminded of the IoT impact this week by ARM\u2019s EVP, Simon Segars.\u00a0 His ARM Techcon keynote presentation this week.\u00a0 noted the IoT is a merging of our digital and physical worlds.\u00a0 He also said predictions are the data from smartphones is \u201cexploding at a 100% growth rate a year for the next 4-5 years.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 To make the point even more stunning, Simon shared that Facebook expects 1-2 billion pictures will be taken and uploaded to their website around Halloween 2012.\u00a0 The good news for those who did not have the time to make it to Santa Clara, CA USA for ARM Techcon, his presentation has been made available for viewing on YouTube.\u00a0 You can find it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lYby-9uI-_c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The IoT conversation continues around the globe.<\/p>\n<h3>IEEE IoT Workshop: You are invited!<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/standards.ieee.org\/events\/iot\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px 11px 0px 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;float: left;padding-top: 0px;border-width: 0px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2012\/10\/ieee_mb_blue.jpg\" alt=\"ieee_mb_blue\" width=\"141\" height=\"41\" align=\"left\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a> IEEE has restored service to their Internet connection at www.ieee.org.\u00a0 However, connection from IEEE staff locations is tentative due to the widespread devastation of Hurricane Sandy in the New Jersey USA area where they live and work.\u00a0 There may be delays in getting official invitations out on the IoT workshop.\u00a0 The IEEE workshop on Internet of Things has been put together in conjunction with several of the CAG member companies, with direct leadership from our STMicroelectonics representative and input from representatives from Broadcom, GE Medical, Ericsson, Qualcomm and others.
