But don\u2019t be mistaken \u2013 it\u2019s taken a while to get to this point.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><BR \/>The concept of the electric car being more expensive despite less power and a lower range are being refuted by technology that has advanced beyond failed prototypes of the recent past. Instead, customer demand and a new generation of technology are replacing the skepticism that dotted the landscape of the past.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>The first wave of electric vehicles, barring efforts made over a century ago when electrification and combustible engines were in their infancy, was when GM produced the EV1 in the mid-1990s. The vehicle itself wasn\u2019t a success, but it led to a fleet of new hybrid vehicles, including the Toyota Prius hybrid and Honda Accord hybrid.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>The second wave of electric vehicles came in 2008 with increased power via the introduction of lithium ion batteries. Over the past decade, lithium ion battery based electric vehicle sales increased from virtually non-existent to 2 million worldwide.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Fast forward to 2017. Electric vehicles sales in the U.S. topped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/ev-charging-stations-2530808186.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">nearly 200,000 units<\/A> in 2017, up from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/newsroom\/news\/2017\/june\/electric-vehicles-have-another-record-year-reaching-2-million-cars-in-2016.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">nearly 159,000<\/A> electric vehicles sold in 2016. Worldwide totals in 2017 were more than 2 million units sold.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>We\u2019re at the beginning of a third wave, and arguably the most disruptive, of vehicle electrification, which is emerging to include electric vehicles with a 200+ mile range at a reasonable price tag \u2015 and the start of the mass adoption of electric vehicles.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><H3>The electric car: it\u2019s not dead&nbsp;<\/H3><br \/>\n<P>Momentum behind electric cars is growing, and future growth is optimistic as electric vehicle sales increase with renewed interest. Newer electric vehicles such as GM\u2019s Chevy Bolt and Tesla\u2019s Model 3, Model S have increased in popularity in spite of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caranddriver.com\/tesla\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">heftier price tags<\/A> than most consumers are used to seeing. These figures are comparatively low to the 17 million total cars sold in 2017, but they\u2019re significant: there\u2019s increased interest and purchasing power.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><BR \/>This increase isn\u2019t only limited to the United States. China is also witnessing an explosion of electric vehicle sales, with more than <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ev-volumes.com\/country\/china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">605,500 vehicles<\/A> delivered in 2017.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>It\u2019s estimated that by 2020, the amount of electric cars in stock could reach anywhere <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/publications\/freepublications\/publication\/GlobalEVOutlook2017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">between 9 million to 20 million<\/A> globally. And according to a report by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">International Energy Agency<\/A>, that number could jump to 40 million or 70 million by 2025.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Following multiple attempts to become mainstream in the market, the market \u2013 and the automotive industry \u2013 are finally ready for electric vehicles.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><H3>Technological advancements increasing electric vehicle sales&nbsp;<\/H3><br \/>\n<P>What technological progress has been made in the last decade to turn the tide in the automotive industry? Here are some of the biggest advances and changes leading consumers to be more open to purchasing an electric vehicle.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><BR \/><STRONG>Better battery cell development.<\/STRONG> Cell energy density improvement has greatly improved. Breakthroughs in chemistries, better cell designs, improved battery pack engineering for energy, thermal management and a reduction in material and manufacturing cost have all led to this jump in improvement.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>In the past decade, lithium ion cell technology has seen significant developments in energy and power density at a much lower cost. This has led some automakers to offer electric vehicles with a 200+ mile range compared to 100+ miles just 10 years ago, while staying at the same price point.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Significant advances still need to be achieved in increasing energy density of lithium ion cells and lowering battery pack cost without negatively impacting its life or safety. One other big challenge is battery performance in hot and cold environments, where batteries can suffer up to a 50 percent decrease in performance.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>While battery manufacturers and automakers work on improving electric range, \u201canxiety\u201d and \u201cuncertainty\u201d (in different weather conditions) in coming years could potentially be reduced with fast-charging capabilities and widespread fast charging networks. Companies such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/destination-charging\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Tesla<\/A> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.evgo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">EVgo<\/A> are already creating fast charging infrastructures across North America.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><STRONG>Electric powertrain operation and management.<\/STRONG> Significant advancements have been made in improving electric motor and power electronics architecture and materials in the past decade. More robust controls and battery state monitoring algorithms have ensured electric powertrain operation without risking safety or durability.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Automakers are increasingly focusing on system level engineering to find and exploit trade-offs between battery and motor design, as well as to execute robust powertrain thermal management strategies. These advances have enabled automakers to deliver electric vehicles with better powertrain life, higher energy efficiency and more safety.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><STRONG>Increased investments for electric vehicle production.<\/STRONG> In the past decade, many automakers have invested heavily in vehicle electrification. GM and Nissan have been leading the charge, but it was Tesla, a company that didn\u2019t exist 15 years ago, that has caught consumers\u2019 imagination and emerged as a dominant player in electric vehicle industry. Tesla\u2019s Model S has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-04-03\/tesla-s-model-3-is-the-best-selling-electric-car-in-the-u-s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">the best-selling electric vehicle<\/A> in the U.S. in 2017.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><BR \/>One major reason why Tesla has become a major player is that it was the first company to create an electric car that moved the focus away from the powertrain, which was a huge implication in the buyer-decision cycle.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>The company is charging a premium for its electric vehicles, not just because of the electric powertrain, but also the first-of-its kind innovations in this type of vehicle, including over-the-air software updates, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/autopilot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Autopilot<\/A> and fast charging. These capabilities stemmed from huge improvements in software, vehicle engineering, electrical engineering, as well as technical advances in electric powertrain development.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><H3>Resolving concerns through innovations in electric vehicles&nbsp;<\/H3><br \/>\n<P>With an ever changing landscape of advancements, what\u2019s holding the majority of the populace from embracing the concept of an electric vehicle?<\/P><br \/>\n<P><BR \/>By 2040, it\u2019s projected that one in three cars sold <a href=\"https:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/2017\/09\/electric-cars-replace-gasoline-engines-2040\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">will be electric<\/A>. But before the market gets to that point, automakers still have quite a few factors to figure out.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>One of the biggest concerns is vehicle range, which needs to be solved through innovations in battery material and cell development, as well as electrical vehicle system design. Other vital factors automakers must consider include finding ways to reduce vehicle weight, improving product lifecycle management and creating powertrain components to vehicle engineering that will alleviate unique noise vibration harshness issues coming from vehicle electrification.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 400px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2019\/09\/Electric-Vehicles_Electric-Vehicle-Sales-1.jpg\" alt=\"Electric Vehicles_Electric Vehicle Sales.jpg\" title=\"Electric Vehicles_Electric Vehicle Sales.jpg\" \/><\/span><\/P><\/p>\n<p><H3>What does the future hold for electric vehicles?<\/H3><br \/>\n<P>The combustible engine will likely still play a big role in the market for many years, but the electric vehicle is a big part of automotive transportation\u2019s future \u2013 and automakers will need to prepare.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Vehicle electrification is coming mainstream with various countries announcing bans on ICE and Diesel vehicles by 2040, significant interest from buyers is buoyed by sharply reducing cost of batteries. Not to mention the fast-approaching era of personal mobility and self-driving cars which will be built on electric powertrains.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>However, all automakers offering electric vehicles are taking significant losses, mainly due to higher engineering, R&amp;D investment cost and electric powertrain cost, which are still significantly higher compared to traditional vehicle powertrains.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>In this series, we\u2019ll begin to cover how automakers can begin to address these needs. Many hurdles are yet to be conquered, but there are ways to trample them underfoot.
