Well, you\u2019re probably familiar with one definition of insanity attributed to Albert Einstein \u201c\u2026doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome\u201d.&nbsp; &nbsp;In our travels, we are surprised by the amount of design insanity going on in organizations\u2026 repeating costly mistakes over and over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, I talked to one young automotive engineer who was given a customer complaint to track down\u2026 \u201cwater on the knee\u201d.&nbsp; &nbsp;During the investigation, she discovered water would come through the door speakers when the bass was turned up. (we\u2019ve all been pounded by the amped-up bass of a nearby vehicle\u2019s woofers).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking inside the door, she found that water which should have drained harmlessly out of the weep holes in the bottom of the door was splashing up onto the speaker wire and following it down and into the speaker, leaving the bass vibrations to do the rest. Looking at the speaker wire\u2019s revision history, she saw the previous version wire had a loop held by a tie wrap. The loop naturally carried the water below the speaker. From its history, she saw the speaker wire revision switched back and forth between loop\/no loop on about a 6-month cadence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, you know what happened, someone looking at extra wire length, cost, etc., and not understanding the reason behind it eliminated the loop saving a few pennies but causing the problem to return\u2014i.e. insane design behavior.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"939\" height=\"638\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2021\/08\/MBSE-solutions.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8925\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2021\/08\/MBSE-solutions.png 939w, https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2021\/08\/MBSE-solutions-600x408.png 600w, https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2021\/08\/MBSE-solutions-768x522.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2021\/08\/MBSE-solutions-900x612.png 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 939px) 100vw, 939px\" \/><figcaption>Water on the knee&#8230; <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>That got us thinking about how much insane design behavior is going on in organizations repeating the same mistakes over and over or \u201chow long does a problem once solved take to come back\u201d. &nbsp;Our research mirrored industry project lengths:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>3 years in automotive<\/li><li>6 months in high-tech<\/li><li>15 years in aerospace<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This makes sense as the problem is experienced by people, the lessons they\u2019ve learned leave with them when they move onto other projects (a major concern if they are retiring).&nbsp; Naturally, the electrical engineer designing the wire harness isn\u2019t concerned about keeping the passengers dry, that\u2019s another domain\u2019s problem, so we have these boundary\/cross-domain problems that can\u2019t be taught except by experience.&nbsp; When the experience leaves, the problems have a tendency to come back (giving <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/teamcenter\/where-are-you-on-your-mbse-software-journey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wheelwright<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.melconway.com\/Home\/Conways_Law.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Conway<\/a> a way of predicting reoccurring systemic cross-domain, cross-organization issues).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"569\" height=\"299\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2021\/08\/Cross-Domain-Problems.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8926\"\/><figcaption>Sources of cross-domain problems and how SE mitigates them<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Of course, systems engineering is in the business of preventing these cross-product problems.&nbsp; Using <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ISO\/IEC_15288\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ISO-15288 systems engineering standard<\/a>, you can see what systems engineers do. &nbsp;If they are not done in a scalable, integrated\/connected way, you end up repeating the problems\u2014i.e. insane design behaviors.&nbsp; As you look at this sampling of cross-domain problem sources, they are related to what systems engineering is equipped to address &gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So using a standard systems engineering process supported by MBSE solutions, we thought about how we could use it to measure how insane our product development processes are to identify how\/where we could improve to prevent these reoccurring problems, improving organization mental health in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking at the MBSE Maturity Matrix below, each of these standard process elements could be accomplished in a variety of ways from a disconnected way in documents, spreadsheets, standalone requirements, and modeling tools up through a connected way where individual SE artifacts are part of the product lifecycle subject to standard PLM practices like configuration, change, variation, etc.&#8211;giving us a way to see how disconnected or connected we are; measuring our proclivity to insane design behavior of repeating the same design mistakes over and over.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2021\/08\/MBSE-Capability-Assessment-1024x830.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8927\" width=\"720\" height=\"622\"\/><figcaption>MBSE Maturity Matrix<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>We want to move from disconnected to connected\/integrated because disconnected\/isolated SE artifacts don\u2019t scale to current product complexity that demands development move at the speed of thought&#8211;I don\u2019t know of any other discipline where making no decision is a decision as everyone else is moving on with or without you!
