{"id":779,"date":"2018-03-26T11:22:58","date_gmt":"2018-03-26T18:22:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.plm.automation.siemens.com\/t5\/Teamcenter-Blog\/Data-Archiving-Product-Information-in-Teamcenter\/ba-p\/478700"},"modified":"2026-03-26T08:55:23","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T12:55:23","slug":"data-archiving-product-information-in-teamcenter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/teamcenter\/data-archiving-product-information-in-teamcenter\/","title":{"rendered":"Data Archiving Product Information in Teamcenter"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Improved&nbsp;Data Archiving in Teamcenter<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Teamcenter 11.4 adds support for the&nbsp;<strong>Near Line&nbsp;Archive<\/strong>&nbsp;feature allowing data archiving from a production Teamcenter instance to a second Teamcenter instance designated as an archive.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal of\u00a0Near Line\u00a0Archive is to move both database metadata and associated volume files that are not expected to be retrieved again from your production Teamcenter instance to the\u00a0<strong>archive<\/strong>.\u00a0Archived data is searchable and can be\u00a0<strong>restored\u00a0<\/strong>quickly and completely back to the production instance as required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When to Consider Data Archiving in Teamcenter<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Over time as large volumes of data accumulate in Teamcenter there are several operational, technical, and compliance reasons for archiving data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/09\/DataArchiving-2-1.png\" alt=\"DataArchiving-2.png\" title=\"DataArchiving-2.png\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-right\" style=\"width: 327px;\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Database performance:&nbsp;<\/strong>as database size increases the database System Global Area (SGA) usage can be managed to help improve performance.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Ability to restore:<\/strong>&nbsp;having the ability to search and restore archived data on-demand, quickly and completely.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Legal and regulatory compliance:&nbsp;<\/strong>You may have legal or regulatory requirements for&nbsp;long term&nbsp;retention and storage of data as part of a wider business strategy<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Hardware:&nbsp;<\/strong>Near Line Archive can&nbsp;added&nbsp;to a production deployment with minimal additional hardware requirements and can help in reducing the window of time required to backup your production Teamcenter instance.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Installation and Deployment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-left\" style=\"width: 372px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"DataArchiving-3.png\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/09\/DataArchiving-3-1.png\" alt=\"DataArchiving-3.png\"><\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Based on&nbsp;XML-enabled Teamcenter Multi-Site Collaboration,&nbsp;Near Line&nbsp;Archive leverages existing Multi-Site Integrated Directory Services Manager (IDSM) and Object Directory Service (ODS) services. This allows fast data transfer, consistency and maintains data integrity.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Near Line Archive can be added to a single-site Teamcenter instance or deployed into an existing Multi-Site federation seamlessly with a range of flexible deployment options.&nbsp;It is also simple to integrate multiple&nbsp;archives&nbsp;Teamcenter instances into your infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can install and configure Near Line Archive manually or use new Teamcenter Environment Manager (TEM) installer options that have been added to streamline the deployment process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To streamline the installation and configuration of&nbsp;Near Line&nbsp;Archive into a single step, enhancements to the Teamcenter Environment Manager (TEM) provide two options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Connect to an existing database<\/strong>&nbsp;is an option allowing you to connect your production instance to another existing Teamcenter instance and designate it as an archive<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Populate archive database&nbsp;<\/strong>allows you to populate a new database instance and setup Teamcenter volumes, designating that database as an archive<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/09\/DataArchiving-4-1.png\" alt=\"DataArchiving-4.PNG\" title=\"DataArchiving-4.PNG\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 999px;\"><\/span>Where required, File Server Cache (FSC) services are installed, as are Multi-Site Collaboration IDSM and ODS services. Teamcenter site preferences are configured for both the archive and production instances and a new TC_DATA is created for the archive.\u00a0This ensures Near Line Archive is\u00a0set up\u00a0and configured and available for use after using the new TEM installer options and allows the archive to be deployed using Xcelerator Shared binaries install with the production deployment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Data Archiving and Restoring Functionality<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The archive and restore functionality in Near Line Archive has seen enhancements made to the Teamcenter rich client, command-line utilities, and a new workflow action handler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><u>Rich Client<\/u><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-left\" style=\"width: 400px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"DataArchiving-5.png\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/09\/DataArchiving-5-1.png\" alt=\"DataArchiving-5.png\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Teamcenter Rich Client (RAC) new&nbsp;<strong>Archive<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Restore<\/strong>&nbsp;menu options are exposed&nbsp;<strong>for system administrators<\/strong>&nbsp;to use under&nbsp;<strong>Tools&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>\u00e0 Multi-Site Collaboration&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>\u00e0 Unused Data&nbsp;<\/strong>menu option.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The<strong>&nbsp;archive&nbsp;<\/strong>option is enabled when Item or 4GD Model or Element objects are first selected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you go through data archiving, the data is searchable in the archive by using the Multi-Site&nbsp;<strong>Remote\u2026&nbsp;<\/strong>saved query to search the archive from the production site. Items returned in the search results can be restored back to the production site from which they were originally archived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Teamcenter rich client has a number of user interface enhancements to provide an intuitive yet simplified user experience in selecting archive and restore options and scoping data to be excluded from the scope of an archive operation, such as standard parts in an assembly. Options for both archive and restore include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Background processing<\/strong>&nbsp;allowing you to continue to work with the rich client whilst archiving and restoring data.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Include BOM&nbsp;<\/strong>option which allows assembly components at all levels to be included.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Dry Run&nbsp;<\/strong>option to allow you to validate the archive or restore operation without making any changes to either instance.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Generate Report&nbsp;<\/strong>which creates an HTML report for the archive or restores operation once completed.<span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 999px;\"><\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><u>Command Line Utilities<\/u><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the rich client features, new&nbsp;<strong>archive&nbsp;<\/strong>and<strong>&nbsp;restore&nbsp;<\/strong>administrative utilities have been added to allow system administrators to archive and restore data from the command line. Where possible, all operations are performed by a system administrator at the production site without the need to log in to the archive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/09\/DataArchiving-7-1.png\" alt=\"DataArchiving-7.png\" title=\"DataArchiving-7.png\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 677px;\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><u>Workflow Action Handler&nbsp;<\/u><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-left\" style=\"width: 400px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"DataArchiving-8.png\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/09\/DataArchiving-8-1.png\" alt=\"DataArchiving-8.png\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">A new workflow action handler&nbsp;<strong>OBJIO_archive_target_objects<\/strong>&nbsp;has been added to allow a system administrator to perform an archive of target objects as part of a Teamcenter workflow process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This capability was added to allow users to identify data to be archived and provide send the workflow to a system administrator who can then perform the archive operation.&nbsp;As part of the workflow process, the originating user can receive notification of the completion of the archive.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Data Archiving: <u>System Administration and Maintenance<\/u><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">&nbsp;<span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-right\" style=\"width: 400px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"DataArchiving-9.png\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/09\/DataArchiving-9-1.png\" alt=\"DataArchiving-9.png\"><\/span>When using the TEM installer options discussed earlier to install and configure Near Line Archive, TEM adds an archive configuration and records a&nbsp;<strong>connection&nbsp;<\/strong>between the production and archive configurations.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When TEM is subsequently used to add additional features to the production instance, this connection is then used to automatically add these features to the archive database in the same operation ensuring the two instances are kept in sync and data models are aligned.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Built on Teamcenter Multi-Site Collaboration,&nbsp;Near Line&nbsp;Archive has the same dependencies and can support different versions of Teamcenter (version 11.4 and later) in line with the published version compatibility for using Multi-Site collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/09\/DataArchiving-10-1.png\" alt=\"DataArchiving-10.PNG\" title=\"DataArchiving-10.PNG\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 650px;\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Site definitions are added \u2013 either manually or through TEM \u2013 to the Sites listed in Organization at both production and archive instances.&nbsp;A site is designated as an archive by selecting the site option&nbsp;<strong>Archive enabled Multi-Site<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This checkbox cannot be set interactively and will be shown as&nbsp;read-only.&nbsp;A system administrator can use the&nbsp;<strong>site_util&nbsp;<\/strong>administration utility to check or uncheck this option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Data Archiving Summary<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By adding rich functionality with simple, streamlined, and flexible deployment options coupled with low administration and maintenance, it is easy to take advantage of data archiving through&nbsp;Near
