{"id":484,"date":"2019-06-29T07:53:21","date_gmt":"2019-06-29T14:53:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.plm.automation.siemens.com\/t5\/Solid-Edge-Blog\/Right-Click-Commands-in-Solid-Edge-Part-1-User-Interface\/ba-p\/596219"},"modified":"2026-03-26T07:28:57","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T11:28:57","slug":"right-click-commands-in-solid-edge-part-1-user-interface","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/solidedge\/right-click-commands-in-solid-edge-part-1-user-interface\/","title":{"rendered":"Right-Click Commands in Solid Edge Part 1 &#8211; User Interface"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P>A <STRONG>right-click<\/STRONG> in Solid Edge gives access to several commands and features not found elsewhere on the menu, ribbon or the toolbars.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Right off the bat, <STRONG>right-clicking<\/STRONG> anywhere in an empty space in the graphics area is the same as clicking the Accept or the Finish buttons when they are visible on the Command bar.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 396px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/09\/RC02-1.png\" alt=\"RC02.png\" title=\"RC02.png\" \/><\/span><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Holding down the <STRONG>right mouse button<\/STRONG> pops up the radial menu which sports a customizable set of 16 commands of your choice, in each of the 28 environments of Solid Edge.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 200px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/09\/RC06-1.png\" alt=\"RC06.png\" title=\"RC06.png\" \/><\/span><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>And by giving a simple yank or tug using the <STRONG>right mouse button<\/STRONG> skips popping up the radial menu altogether, yet starts the command in that sector as shown below.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 308px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/09\/RC07-1.gif\" alt=\"RC07.gif\" title=\"RC07.gif\" \/><\/span><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>More in detail about the radial menu <a href=\"https:\/\/community.plm.automation.siemens.com\/t5\/Solid-Edge-Blog\/UI-Grudges-Put-to-Rest\/ba-p\/422594\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">in this article<\/A>.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>When there are too many objects in a small area or when there are some objects hidden behind others as in the case of an assembly, hovering for a while and then <STRONG>right-clicking<\/STRONG> brings up the QuickPick list, which lets you select any of the objects lying beneath the mouse cursor.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 548px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/09\/RC09-1.gif\" alt=\"RC09.gif\" title=\"RC09.gif\" \/><\/span><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><STRONG>Right-clicking<\/STRONG> on the title bar of Solid Edge displays the context menu from which you can close Solid Edge, though this is more of a Windows feature.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>When you <STRONG>right-click<\/STRONG>&nbsp;in the portion of the title bar called the quick access toolbar or simply the QAT, a context menu appears where the commands pointed with the blue arrow in the image below are available exclusively from the context menu.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 536px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/09\/RC59-1.png\" alt=\"RC59.png\" title=\"RC59.png\" \/><\/span><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>You can <STRONG>right-click<\/STRONG> any command on any ribbon bar tab and choose to add it to the QAT on-the-fly without having to go through the lengthy process of using the Customize dialog.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>A button on the QAT can be removed by simply <STRONG>right-clicking<\/STRONG> on it as shown in the animated GIF below:<\/P><br \/>\n<P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 476px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/09\/RC11-1.gif\" alt=\"RC11.gif\" title=\"RC11.gif\" \/><\/span><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>The other option \u2018show QAT below the ribbon\u2019 brings the QAT closer to where the action is i.e. the model or the drawing.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Another option in the&nbsp;<STRONG>right-click<\/STRONG> menu is to minimize the ribbon bar which can also be accomplished by double-clicking the ribbon tab.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>The other options about switching themes and customizing are also available from the system menu. Read about customizing QAT and the radial menu <a href=\"https:\/\/community.plm.automation.siemens.com\/t5\/Solid-Edge-Blog\/QAT-versus-the-Radial-Menu\/ba-p\/452328\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">in this article<\/A>.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><STRONG>Right-clicking<\/STRONG> on a file tab pops up this menu:<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-inline\" style=\"width: 188px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/09\/RC12-1.png\" alt=\"RC12.png\" title=\"RC12.png\" \/><\/span><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Of these, only the first and the last options are available elsewhere &#8211; on the ribbon and the Pathfinder respectively.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>There\u2019s a difference between the Close Document and Close Window commands. The Close Window option relates to the New Window which opens the currently open document in a new tab.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>A scenario where you might want to open a model or a drawing in a new window is when measuring between distant located areas as shown in the video below.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-embed-center video-embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"embedly-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.embedly.com\/widgets\/media.html?src=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fembed%2F739PA6usQXQ%3Ffeature%3Doembed&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D739PA6usQXQ&amp;image=https%3A%2F%2Fi.ytimg.com%2Fvi%2F739PA6usQXQ%2Fhqdefault.jpg&amp;key=fad07bfa4bd747d3bdea27e17b533c0e&amp;type=text%2Fhtml&amp;schema=youtube\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" title=\"Video\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-inline\" style=\"width: 30px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/09\/TipIcon-1.png\" alt=\"TipIcon.png\" title=\"TipIcon.png\" \/><\/span>&nbsp;<STRONG>Note<\/STRONG> that whereas the Close Window simply closes any additional tabs of a document, the Close Document actually removes the file from the current Solid Edge session.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><STRONG>Right clicking<\/STRONG> on the files tab away from any of the file tabs shows a pop-up menu with the following options:<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 321px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/09\/RC20-1.png\" alt=\"RC20.png\" title=\"RC20.png\" \/><\/span><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>A video in the 3<SUP>rd<\/SUP> part of this series illustrates these options.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>When you <STRONG>right click<\/STRONG> on the recent documents list either from the QAT or the system menu, only two options are presented:<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 560px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/09\/RC28-1.png\" alt=\"RC28.png\" title=\"RC28.png\" \/><\/span><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>However, using a trick in <a href=\"https:\/\/community.plm.automation.siemens.com\/t5\/Solid-Edge-Blog\/Tips-and-Tricks-from-Forum-Users-19\/ba-p\/508563\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">this blog article<\/A> it is possible to have several more options as shown below:<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 505px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/09\/RC29-1.png\" alt=\"RC29.png\" title=\"RC29.png\" \/><\/span><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Right-clicking on the toolbar that lies in the bottom-right corner of the Solid Edge application window displays a menu which has items that can toggle the display of the corresponding tool on the bar. For example the Quick View Cube, Video Record and upload to YouTube, Zoom Slider, etc.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 444px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/09\/RC53-1.png\" alt=\"RC53.png\" title=\"RC53.png\" \/><\/span><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>A unique command available from this toolbar is a precursor to the quick view cube and is called the Common Views.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 185px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/09\/RC54-1.png\" alt=\"RC54.png\" title=\"RC54.png\" \/><\/span><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Several commands that do not need a command bar button can also be terminated with a <STRONG>right-click<\/STRONG>. The zoom and zoom area commands are few examples.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>But invoking the zoom commands from the toolbar is old-fashioned.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Instead, you can use either the <STRONG>Alt +<\/STRONG> <STRONG>right-mouse drag<\/STRONG> or <STRONG>Alt + Ctrl + right-mouse drag<\/STRONG> to invoke Zoom Area, the difference being as illustrated below:<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 634px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/09\/RC03-1.png\" alt=\"RC03.png\" title=\"RC03.png\" \/><\/span><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>These are similar to using the Rectangle by 2 Points and Rectangle by Center commands, if it helps.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><STRONG>Alt + Right-Click<\/STRONG> is Zoom Fit&nbsp;<span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-inline\" style=\"width: 29px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/09\/RC05-1.png\" alt=\"RC05.png\" title=\"RC05.png\" \/><\/span><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><STRONG>Shift + Right-Drag<\/STRONG> starts Rotate View&nbsp;<span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-inline\" style=\"width: 29px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/09\/RC04-1.png\" alt=\"RC04.png\" title=\"RC04.png\" \/><\/span><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><STRONG>Ctrl + Shift + Right-Drag<\/STRONG> is Pan&nbsp;<span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-inline\" style=\"width: 31px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/09\/RC27-1.png\" alt=\"RC27.png\" title=\"RC27.png\" \/><\/span><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><STRONG>Ctrl + Right-Drag<\/STRONG> initiates Zoom In-out&nbsp;<span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-inline\" style=\"width: 31px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/09\/SSE16-1.png\" alt=\"SSE16.png\" title=\"SSE16.png\" \/><\/span><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>The next part of this article shows how
