For this example, I am using the out-of-the-box ISO Metric templates installed with Solid Edge. Obviously you would use whatever templates you have configured for your system.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><IMG src=\"https:\/\/siemensplm.i.lithium.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/15213i4060FB81C94B8270\/image-size\/large?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"screenshot.1439241434.png\" title=\"screenshot.1439241434.png\" \/><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Once we have located our templates, copy the default template we wish to use for .par files to the &#8220;%WINDIR%ShellNew&#8221; folder. Note that you can type &#8220;%WINDIR%ShellNew&#8221; [without the quotes] into the Windows Explorer address bar and it will &#8220;automagically&#8221; resolve to the full folder name.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><IMG src=\"https:\/\/siemensplm.i.lithium.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/15214i5EBB476CCD4F0EB1\/image-size\/large?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"screenshot.1439241497.png\" title=\"screenshot.1439241497.png\" \/><\/P><br \/>\n<P><IMG src=\"https:\/\/siemensplm.i.lithium.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/15215i86EA99799764FA1C\/image-size\/large?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"screenshot.1439241659.png\" title=\"screenshot.1439241659.png\" \/><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Then using your favourite registry editing tool, open the registry and under &#8220;HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT&#8221; locate and expand the .par file extension.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><IMG src=\"https:\/\/siemensplm.i.lithium.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/15216iC08D53B14D5EAD47\/image-size\/large?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"screenshot.1439241869.png\" title=\"screenshot.1439241869.png\" \/><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Under &#8220;HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.parSolidEdge.PartDocumentShellNew&#8221; create a new String Value called &#8220;FileName&#8221;.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><IMG src=\"https:\/\/siemensplm.i.lithium.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/15217iA907B168F78DC5E0\/image-size\/large?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"screenshot.1439242010.png\" title=\"screenshot.1439242010.png\" \/><BR \/><IMG src=\"https:\/\/siemensplm.i.lithium.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/15218i38246396A13B8C73\/image-size\/large?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"screenshot.1439242119.png\" title=\"screenshot.1439242119.png\" \/><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><SPAN>Set the value of this new &#8220;FileName&#8221; setting to match the filename of our template file we copied into the &#8220;%WINDIR%ShellNew&#8221; folder.<\/SPAN><\/P><br \/>\n<P><SPAN><IMG src=\"https:\/\/siemensplm.i.lithium.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/15219i763F30AC0DBF84B7\/image-size\/large?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"screenshot.1439242120.png\" title=\"screenshot.1439242120.png\" \/><\/SPAN><\/P><br \/>\n<P><BR \/>Now in Windows Explorer when you right-click -&gt; New you will see a selection to create a new Solid Edge Part Document. Note, to see the change we just made, we may have to first open a new Windows Explorer.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><IMG src=\"https:\/\/siemensplm.i.lithium.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/15220iC74FFF588E1FD92F\/image-size\/large?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"screenshot.1439246208.png\" title=\"screenshot.1439246208.png\" \/><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>We now need to rinse and repeat the above workflow for each of the Solid Edge file types we want to add to our right-click -&gt; New menu.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><BR \/>For the .asm file extension we need to create a &#8220;FileName&#8221; entry under the &#8220;HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.asmSolidEdge.AssemblyDocumentShellNew&#8221; key and set the value to our .asm template copied into &#8220;%WINDIR%ShellNew&#8221;.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><IMG src=\"https:\/\/siemensplm.i.lithium.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/15221i9BBF447304D406BC\/image-size\/large?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"screenshot.1439247129.png\" title=\"screenshot.1439247129.png\" \/><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Refreshing the Windows Explorer window, Solid Edge Assembly is now available as a right-click -&gt; New selection.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><IMG src=\"https:\/\/siemensplm.i.lithium.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/15222i81317266143B4E8E\/image-size\/large?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"screenshot.1439247367.png\" title=\"screenshot.1439247367.png\" \/><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>For sheet metal files we need to create a &#8220;FileName&#8221; entry under the &#8220;HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.psmSolidEdge.SheetMetalDocumentShellNew&#8221; key and once again set the value to our .psm template copied into &#8220;%WINDIR%ShellNew&#8221;.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><IMG src=\"https:\/\/siemensplm.i.lithium.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/15223iDB73A23A7E6D4ABE\/image-size\/large?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"screenshot.1439247468.png\" title=\"screenshot.1439247468.png\" \/><\/P><br \/>\n<P><IMG src=\"https:\/\/siemensplm.i.lithium.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/15224i9878FDEB2259967E\/image-size\/large?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"screenshot.1439247554.png\" title=\"screenshot.1439247554.png\" \/>&nbsp;<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Finally, for the Draft .dft files we create &#8220;FileName&#8221; under the &#8220;HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.dftSolidEdge.DraftDocumentShellNew&#8221; key, with the value set to our .dft template name copied into &#8220;%WINDIR%ShellNew&#8221;.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><IMG src=\"https:\/\/siemensplm.i.lithium.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/15225i769991DB3102E6B6\/image-size\/large?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"screenshot.1439248117.png\" title=\"screenshot.1439248117.png\" \/><\/P><br \/>\n<P><IMG src=\"https:\/\/siemensplm.i.lithium.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/15226i40D0A7C4F0A17F5C\/image-size\/large?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"screenshot.1439248344.png\" title=\"screenshot.1439248344.png\" \/>&nbsp;<\/P><br \/>\n<P>So with a few quick registry edits and some file copying, we now have Windows Explorer right-click -&gt; New functionality for each of the Solid Edge file types.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><IMG src=\"https:\/\/siemensplm.i.lithium.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/15227i391F67B4BFD5BD4B\/image-size\/large?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"screenshot.1439241225.png\" title=\"screenshot.1439241225.png\" \/><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>If you are an organization that manages the template files on a centrally located network store, this does introduce an issue of the local template file possibly becoming out-of-date with the network stored templates. However, with a little extra work, these concerns could be easily addressed [Task Scheduler anyone?].<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>This post walks you through the steps to manually add this functionality to Windows Explorer; with further effort, a sweet little GUI application could be authored that allows you to conveniently do this, possibly even allowing checking and updating of templates from the network [add another potential unfinished project to my list of many&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" id=\"robotsad\" class=\"emoticon emoticon-robotsad\" src=\"https:\/\/siemensplm.i.lithium.com\/i\/smilies\/16x16_robot-sad.png\" alt=\"Robot Sad\" title=\"Robot Sad\" \/> ].<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>P.S. For those less comfortable with editing their registry files, I have attached a sample registry fie for your convenience.
