{"id":10241,"date":"2014-04-10T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-04-10T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.plm.automation.siemens.com\/t5\/Solid-Edge-Blog\/Using-CAMWorks-for-Solid-Edge\/ba-p\/26998"},"modified":"2026-03-26T07:25:15","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T11:25:15","slug":"using-camworks-for-solid-edge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/solidedge\/using-camworks-for-solid-edge\/","title":{"rendered":"Using CAMWorks for Solid Edge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P>I want to use this post to address the basic operation of CAMWorks for Solid Edge.&nbsp; At its core the product uses built-in intelligence to recognize several different types of prismatic features and then uses pre-defined strategies to machine those features.&nbsp; Recognizable features include: Pockets (Open, Closed, Circular, Rectangular and Irregular-shaped), Slots (several varities), and Holes (also several varities) and Bosses.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 876px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/09\/CAMWorks-2.5-Recognized-Features-1.jpg\" alt=\"CAMWorks 2.5 Recognized Features.JPG\" title=\"CAMWorks 2.5 Recognized Features.JPG\" \/><\/span><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>To recognize these features, CAMWorks examines the geometry, NOT the feature list (aka History Tree).&nbsp; This is important, especially when dealing with imported solid bodies where the feature list consists of one item \u2013 the copied body.&nbsp; It is also important when the model was built using Synchronous Technology, because the feature list there is very abbreviated.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Once the feature list is built, CAMWorks reaches into the Technology database (TechDB) to assign machining strategies.&nbsp; There are default strategies that come shipped with the software, but all experienced users tell me that some time must be spent customizing the TechDB to their style of machining.&nbsp; This makes sense to me \u2013 as a former post processor builder, I always ran into situations where new customers would want a proved-out post processor changed to match their shop\u2019s style.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-right\" style=\"width: 404px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/09\/CAMWorks-Main-Buttons-1.jpg\" alt=\"CAMWorks Main Buttons.JPG\" title=\"CAMWorks Main Buttons.JPG\" \/><\/span>After the TechDB builds the operation list, the rest of the work is very similar to other CAM systems: generate the tool paths, simulate the cutting motion, and post process.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>The following video demonstrates how CAMWorks for Solid Edge works on a simple assembly model.&nbsp; I am using the out-of-the-box TechDB, so no fancy demo tricks here.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><\/p>\n<div class=\"lia-vid-container video-embed-center\">\n<div id=\"lia-vid-FiM3BzbDoM4rIrU-JmgdvijS1-vtBLyAw596h447r285\" class=\"lia-video-ooyala-player-container\"><\/div>\n<p><script>LITHIUM.OoyalaPlayer.addVideo('https:\/\/player.ooyala.com\/static\/v4\/production\/', 'lia-vid-FiM3BzbDoM4rIrU-JmgdvijS1-vtBLyAw596h447r285', 'FiM3BzbDoM4rIrU-JmgdvijS1-vtBLyA', {\"pcode\":\"sxdjkxOluLl_gSQrV57FiGraFE2-\",\"playerBrandingId\":\"ODI0MmQ3NjNhYWVjODliZTgzY2ZkMDdi\",\"width\":\"596px\",\"height\":\"447px\"});<\/script><a class=\"video-embed-link\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.plm.automation.siemens.com\/t5\/video\/gallerypage\/video-id\/FiM3BzbDoM4rIrU-JmgdvijS1-vtBLyA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(view in My Videos)<\/a><\/div>\n<p><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><SPAN><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-left\" style=\"width: 100px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/09\/Jim-closeup-100x100-7.jpg\" alt=\"Jim closeup 100x100.jpg\" title=\"Jim closeup 100x100.jpg\" \/><\/span>Jim has a Master\u2019s degree in Business Administration from the University of Central Missouri.
