But right now my thoughts were on the backyard.&nbsp;<em>My new arborvitae!&nbsp;<\/em>No one was looking. I grabbed the hose and gave them a quick wash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the end the lawn would suffer, the car stayed green and the arborvitae prevailed (no one knows how). Like a stray dog, we shoo the rain away but only for so long. Eventually, we find ourselves wanting it back. Only this time it wasn\u2019t coming back.&nbsp;My car stayed putrid green, for a long time, which among other things led to excessive windshield washer fluid usage.&nbsp;So much so that I found myself one day driving with windshield washer fluid falling on my lap.&nbsp;What was happening?&nbsp;My windows were open. <em>Ugh<\/em>, w<em>here is the vehicle water management!?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For any vehicle, poorly handled water can be a problem, one that is very well known to today\u2019s automotive engineers. Whether a light drizzle or a deep flood, water impacts almost all aspects of a car design, from driver visibility and component longevity to vehicle safety and overall performance.&nbsp;For years, tackling these issues meant costly, time-consuming physical tests.&nbsp;Today, however, car designers are equipped with an ever-growing suite of tools to simulate and mitigate excess water flow and ingress concerns.&nbsp;This growing tool set, coupled with the continuous advancement of high performance computing (HPC), has solidified simulation as the \u201cmust have\u201d option for the modern engineer, boosting cost and time savings early in the design cycle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You\u2019ve Got Options<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To help navigate the simulation waters,&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/plm.sw.siemens.com\/en-US\/simcenter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Simcenter <\/a>software and services offers both RANS and SPH method-based analysis tools providing efficient combinations of fast, high fidelity solutions. A RANS solver treats fluid as a continuous medium and solves for averaged quantities like velocity, pressure, and temperature on a fixed mesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RANS methods have several strengths:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Computational efficiency for steady-state flows: <\/strong>Generally more efficient for steady-state or quasi-steady flows, making them suitable for larger domains and longer simulation times.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bulk Fluid\/Air Flow Prediction: <\/strong>Excellent for predicting overall water behavior with aerodynamic interaction of the vehicle (multiphase).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pressure Prediction: <\/strong>Provide stable, accurate pressure fields used in coupled deflection and stress predictions, ie &#8211; FSI (Fluid\/Solid Interaction) or FEA\/CFD coupling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>SPH methods are mesh-free, Lagrangian particle-based methods. Instead of solving on a grid, the fluid is represented by particles that move with the flow, carrying properties such as mass, velocity, and pressure. So, although counterintuitive, a vehicle\u2019s underbody must be designed for impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video autoplay controls muted src=\"https:\/\/videos.mentor-cdn.com\/mgc\/videos\/5400\/23fc9bc5-accf-4add-835a-d2dd96e158d5-en-US-video.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Engineers start the analysis by calculating high speed wading impact loads.&nbsp; These loads are then used as input conditions to predict underpanel deflections.&nbsp; The deflections correspond to mount point stresses which can lead to material fatigue and failure.&nbsp; The entire workflow is a coupled analysis called Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI), and is essentially a two-part process with two separate simulation disciplines:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>CFD <\/strong>&#8211; A transient, multiphase (air\/water) simulation calculates hydrodynamic pressure loads on the vehicle&#8217;s underbody as it wades (can include aerodynamic effects).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>FEA <\/strong>&#8211; Pressure loads are mapped onto a structural model and a <a href=\"https:\/\/plm.sw.siemens.com\/en-US\/simcenter\/mechanical-simulation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Finite Element Analysis Solver<\/a> is used to compute deflection, stress and strain of the underpanels and connecting components.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Closing the Loop: Co-Simulation for Realistic Wading Dynamics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Typical 3D wading simulations share a common simplification: the vehicle\u2019s speed through the water is prescribed as a fixed boundary condition.\u00a0Depending on the intention of the analysis, this assumption may very well be sufficient.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, in reality, no driver maintains a perfectly constant velocity when a wall of water suddenly pushes back against the front bumper. The car decelerates, the driver adjusts the throttle, the suspension compresses under shifting hydrodynamic loads, and the whole behavior of the vehicle changes \u2014 pitch, heave, and ride height all evolve in response to the water. This dynamic feedback loop between the fluid and the vehicle has been known to influence the pressure distribution around the underbody and the water level at the air intake, thus adding to the risk of component flooding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To account for this added complexity and additional degrees of freedom (suspension compliance, drivetrain response, driver behavior) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.siemens.com\/en-us\/products\/simcenter\/fluids-thermal-simulation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Simcenter fluids and thermal software<\/a> offers a Simcenter Amesim-Simcenter STAR-CCM+ coupled solution.\u00a0 Simcenter Amesim excels at modeling the vehicle as a dynamic system \u2014 longitudinal dynamics, suspension kinematics, tire-road interaction, drivetrain, and driver control logic, all as a fast-running 1D model. Meanwhile, Simcenter STAR-CCM+ excels at resolving the complex 3D transient free-surface flow around the vehicle geometry. As the car enters the trough, the water resistance builds, and the Simcenter Amesim-modeled driver reacts just as a real driver would, adjusting throttle and brakes to maintain the target speed against the rising drag. Meanwhile, the suspension responds to the shifting load distribution, altering ride height and pitch angle, which in turn changes the flow field computed by Simcenter STAR-CCM+. All of this happens naturally, without any need to pre-derive motion profiles from physical test data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A proof-of-concept demonstration of this approach confirms that the coupled simulation captures the expected physical behavior. The driver model shows a clear reaction to the increasing water resistance \u2014 brake and throttle inputs adapt throughout the maneuver, and the vehicle speed evolves as a consequence of the interaction rather than as a prescribed curve. Engineers can freely add detail to the 1D system \u2014 more sophisticated suspension models, active chassis control, realistic drivetrain inertia \u2014 without slowing down the flow simulation.
