And as universities around the world hand out diplomas, we thought we\u2019d wrap up a year of inspirational <strong><em>Simcenter for Academia<\/em><\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/simcenter\/the-future-for-the-next-generation-of-engineers-isvuca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blogging <\/a>with some advice straight from the source: recent graduates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We recently chatted to two former students who credit their early exposure to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/global\/en\/our-story\/partners\/academic\/educator\/simcenter-educator.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Simcenter<\/a> during university Formula Student teams for the successful engineering careers they are starting now. Take a few minutes to meet Valentyn Haidai and Thomas Nyhues and hear what they have to say about Siemens, Simcenter, and school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Valentyn Haidai<\/strong>, student from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-medium is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/07\/Valentyn_Haidai-400x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29008\" width=\"169\" height=\"160\"\/><figcaption>Valentyn Haidai portrait<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Valentyn Haidai is a young Ukrainian engineer who studied at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kit.edu\/english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Karlsruhe Institute of Technology<\/a> (KIT) in Germany. He graduated in 2019 with a degree in mechanical engineering. During his third year of university, he joined the Formula Student team at KIT. Thanks to a sponsorship by Siemens, he was introduced to Siemens digitalization tools like<a href=\"https:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/global\/en\/products\/simcenter\/STAR-CCM.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Simcenter STAR-CCM+<\/a> as part of the aerodynamic team. Hooked immediately, he knew aerodynamics, simulation and thermal dynamics was the direction he was going to take as a young engineer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:12px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile I was studying, I was looking for internships where I could work with Simcenter STAR-CCM+ as part of my bachelor\u2019s thesis. During my first one, I was at Porsche Motorsports working on the Formula E cooling system development using Simcenter STAR CCM+. The main question during the job interview was, \u2018Could I start working immediately in Simcenter STAR-CCM+?\u2019 The Bertrandt Group is an engineering consultancy so we work directly on projects from our automotive customers. It was important to the team that I didn\u2019t need 3 months of training. With my Simcenter STAR-CCM+ experience, I could start to work on projects as soon as IT got my PC set-up,\u201d adds Valentyn Haidai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is looking into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/global\/en\/products\/simcenter\/simcenter-amesim.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Simcenter Amesim<\/a> at the moment as well. \u201cIt seems to be a great tool that you can couple into CFD simulations, switch between certain parts of the system in Simcenter STAR-CCM+ and review the entire cooling system using Simcenter Amesim,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Valentyn&#8217;s advice for other students<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRegarding Siemens tools from my side, I can highly recommend learning Simcenter STAR-CCM+ if you are interested in aerodynamics or thermal engineering areas. It is a great tool.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is important to share experiences with other users and gain experience from people who really know the tool. Plus there is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/global\/en\/support\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Siemens support portal<\/a> if you have the license. And there are also some great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/global\/en\/your-success\/resources\/#\/?productKeywords=simcenter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">webinars<\/a>. I recently attended one on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/global\/en\/webinar\/heatsink-thermal-design\/95701\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">heat sink development<\/a>. It was one of best ones I have seen from Siemens,\u201d concludes Haidai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thomas Nyhues, Student at RWTH Aachen University <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/07\/Teamfotos-Ecurie-Aix-40-1-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29012\" width=\"157\" height=\"227\"\/><figcaption>Thomas Nyhues<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Our next interviewee is freshly graduated. Thomas Nyhues received his masters in mechanical engineering from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rwth-aachen.de\/go\/id\/a\/?lidx=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RWTH Aachen University<\/a> in Germany in May 2021. Although he admits to being exposed to Siemens NX and Simcenter during lectures at university, he is the first to admit that the real training with Simcenter happened when he joined the Formula Student Team Ecurie Aix of the RWTH Aachen University in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy experience on the student team was so valuable. You really work on something that is your passion. It is something that you want to do. You don\u2019t have to do it. I think that is the main point. You really get into the Siemens products. Sure you spend hours and hours, but you have fun doing it,\u201d he states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:6px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>He modeled aerodynamics aspects with Simcenter STAR-CCM+ in 2017-2018. Image: Vincent Sima<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First experience as PhD student to design battery using simulation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In early June, he joined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mahle.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MAHLE International<\/a> as part of his PhD work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor my Ph.D. thesis, I am working on battery thermal management. The whole experience on the Formula Student team and the project with the Siemens team really helped me get this Ph.D. position. The fact that I already had extensive experience with battery design and simulation using Simcenter STAR-CCM+ was a key factor,\u201d explains Nyhues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thomas&#8217; advices for other students to use Simcenter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGet involved in projects that you find interesting outside your studies as soon as possible. Maybe an exam doesn\u2019t work out as planned, and you are a bit down. You just go to the workshop and get your motivation back.
