Indeed, it&#8217;s also interesting to look at the big picture and understand past evolutions from a macroscopic perspective.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>If we consider the automotive industry, which&nbsp;car could better&nbsp;illustrate&nbsp;its trends than the all-time best-seller&nbsp;i.e. the <STRONG>Toyota Corolla<\/STRONG>?<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Starting in 1966, the Japanese OEM has sold more than <STRONG>45 million<\/STRONG> Corolla in more than 50 years. In 2019, the 12th generation will be released and is expected to strongly contribute to the continuous sales growth of this iconic family car.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 999px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/Toyota-Corolla-gallery-1.png\" alt=\"Toyota Corolla gallery.png\" title=\"Toyota Corolla gallery.png\" \/><span class=\"lia-inline-image-caption\" onclick=\"event.preventDefault();\">Toyota Corolla gallery<\/span><\/span><\/P><br \/>\n<P>Looking at these impressing numbers, I decided to build a <STRONG>Simcenter Amesim model and analyze the fuel economy and longitudinal performances of all the models<\/STRONG> to better understand why this car is so successful.&nbsp;I decided to focus on the US market, considering only the manual transmission variants (knowing that is not the preferred&nbsp;variant in this market, but having more data available) for the sake of simplicity.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><H2><STRONG>Data gathering and Simcenter Amesim model setup<\/STRONG><\/H2><\/p>\n<p><P>The first step was to gather basic data (engine max power, vehicle weight, tires dimensions, gear ratios &#8230;) about each vehicle generations, browsing the web. After some time spent on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toyota_Corolla\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">Wikipedia<\/A>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toyota-global.com\/showroom\/vehicle_heritage\/corolla\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">Toyota Global site<\/A> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fueleconomy.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">EPA fuel economy website<\/A>, I ended up with this Excel file.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 750px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/Toyota-Corolla-internet-data-gathered-1.png\" width=\"750\" height=\"351\" alt=\"Toyota Corolla internet data gathered.png\" title=\"Toyota Corolla internet data gathered.png\" \/><span class=\"lia-inline-image-caption\" onclick=\"event.preventDefault();\">Toyota Corolla Internet data<\/span><\/span><\/P><br \/>\n<P>Based on these data, and to avoid&nbsp;building a Simcenter Amesim model from scratch, I&nbsp;started from an <STRONG>existing template model<\/STRONG> which suites well the Toyota Corolla vehicle architecture meaning a gasoline engine with manual transmission and the simulation purposes which are the fuel consumption and longitudinal&nbsp;performances.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 629px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/IFP-Drive-demo-models-1.png\" width=\"629\" height=\"815\" alt=\"IFP-Drive demo models.png\" title=\"IFP-Drive demo models.png\" \/><span class=\"lia-inline-image-caption\" onclick=\"event.preventDefault();\">Simcenter Amesim IFP-Drive library demo models (partial list)<\/span><\/span><\/P><br \/>\n<P>The model chosen is now opened and ready to be parameterized:<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 400px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/Simcenter-Amesim-Toyota-Corolla-model-1.png\" alt=\"Simcenter Amesim Toyota Corolla model.png\" title=\"Simcenter Amesim Toyota Corolla model.png\" \/><span class=\"lia-inline-image-caption\" onclick=\"event.preventDefault();\">Simcenter Amesim Toyota Corolla model<\/span><\/span><\/P><br \/>\n<P>When focusing on the fuel consumption of a car, the core data you need is the engine fuel efficiency map (as a function of the engine speed and load). This map usually cannot be found on the web. Nevertheless, Simcenter Amesim provides a powerful App that allows rebuilding this map based on engine basic parameters: the &#8220;engine table&nbsp;creator&#8221;.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>This App requires simple inputs like max power and torque at given engine speed, type of combustion (diesel, gasoline), engine stroke, number of cylinders, fuel characteristics &#8230; The App taps into a database coming from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifpenergiesnouvelles.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">IFPEN research institute<\/A>&nbsp;and generates max and min torque maps,&nbsp;Brake Specific Fuel Consumption&nbsp;map and some other maps ready to be used in IFP-Drive engine model.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 672px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/Simcenter-Amesim-IFP-Drive-engine-tables-creator-1.png\" width=\"672\" height=\"175\" alt=\"Simcenter Amesim IFP-Drive engine tables creator.png\" title=\"Simcenter Amesim IFP-Drive engine tables creator.png\" \/><span class=\"lia-inline-image-caption\" onclick=\"event.preventDefault();\">IFP-Drive engine table creator<\/span><\/span><\/P><br \/>\n<P>Once the maps are generated for all the engines, we come back to our Excel file and link it to the Amesim model to automatically import other parameters and generate a batch file (automatic successive runs of all the Corolla models). To do so, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/community.plm.automation.siemens.com\/t5\/System-Simulation-Knowledge-Base\/Couple-database-management-and-visualization-capabilities-of\/ta-p\/468284\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Simcenter Amesim Excel Add-in<\/A> is used:<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 692px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/Excel-Add-in-1.png\" width=\"692\" height=\"218\" alt=\"Excel Add-in.png\" title=\"Excel Add-in.png\" \/><span class=\"lia-inline-image-caption\" onclick=\"event.preventDefault();\">Simcenter Amesim Excel Add-in interface<\/span><\/span><BR \/><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 400px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/Excel-Add-in-configuration-1.png\" alt=\"Excel Add-in configuration.png\" title=\"Excel Add-in configuration.png\" \/><span class=\"lia-inline-image-caption\" onclick=\"event.preventDefault();\">Link between Excel data and model parameters<\/span><\/span>The batch run parameters file is generated from the Excel sheet and imported into Simcenter Amesim Study Manager.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><H2><STRONG>Simcenter Amesim simulation results analysis<\/STRONG><\/H2><\/p>\n<p><P>To compare all the 11 generations of Toyota Corolla, we used&nbsp;3 different driving cycles:<\/P><br \/>\n<UL><br \/>\n<LI>The FTP75 used by EPA for giving a typical &#8220;city&#8221; fuel consumption&nbsp;rating<\/LI><br \/>\n<LI>The HWFET used by EPA&nbsp;<SPAN>for giving a typical &#8220;highway&#8221; fuel consumption&nbsp;rating<\/SPAN><\/LI><br \/>\n<LI><SPAN>A full load cycle to determine the maximum speed of the vehicle<\/SPAN><\/LI><br \/>\n<\/UL><br \/>\n<P>The simulation results are compared for the 3 cycles with the 11 Toyota Corolla generations:<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 732px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/Corolla-history-figures-1.png\" width=\"732\" height=\"352\" alt=\"Corolla history figures.png\" title=\"Corolla history figures.png\" \/><span class=\"lia-inline-image-caption\" onclick=\"event.preventDefault();\">Simcenter Amesim Toyota Corolla models results<\/span><\/span>By comparing simulation results (blue) with available Internet&nbsp;data (red) for fuel consumption and max speed, it appears that simulation results match quite well with references. It worth saying that data like drag coefficient or fuel consumption may not be available or reliable for old models (1st to 3rd generation) as wind tunnel testing, CFD or standardized driving cycle were not common practices at that time.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><STRONG>Fuel consumption&nbsp;values are not so much better in the latest generation vehicles than in the old ones<\/STRONG>. This is mostly due to the increase in&nbsp;the weight of vehicle coming from passive safety improvements as well as additional comfort features like air-conditioning. The emission regulations that have been imposed since the 90&#8217;s can also explain a decrease in engine efficiency. Taking a step back on the results, it is clear that the <STRONG>improvements done on the powertrain efficiency and aerodynamics have been partly counterbalanced by the vehicle weight increase and the emissions regulations<\/STRONG>.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Do you think the 12th generation will make a quantum leap when it comes to fuel consumption?
