{"id":26914,"date":"2021-05-25T05:18:56","date_gmt":"2021-05-25T09:18:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/simcenter\/?p=26914"},"modified":"2026-03-26T06:19:35","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T10:19:35","slug":"towel-day-the-aerodynamics-of-freefalling-sperm-whale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/simcenter\/towel-day-the-aerodynamics-of-freefalling-sperm-whale\/","title":{"rendered":"Towel Day: The Aerodynamics of Freefalling Sperm Whale"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>In many of the more relaxed civilizations on the Outer Eastern Rim of the Galaxy, the Hitchhiker&#8217;s Guide has already supplanted the great Encyclopaedia Galactica as the standard repository of all knowledge and wisdom, for though it has many omissions and contains much that is apocryphal, or at least wildly inaccurate, it scores over the older, more pedestrian work in two important respects.<\/p><p><br>First, it is slightly cheaper; and secondly, it has the words DON&#8217;T PANIC inscribed in large friendly letters on its cover.<\/p><cite>Douglas Adams, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Hitchhiker&#8217;s Guide to the Galaxy<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Hitchhiker&#8217;s Guide entry\u00a0 #9472659 tells the story of <a href=\"https:\/\/hitchhikers.fandom.com\/wiki\/Magrathean_sperm_whale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a sperm whale that spontaneously comes into existence \u201cseveral miles\u201d above the planet Magrathea<\/a> and spends the next approximately 90 seconds coming to terms with its existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"589\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/05\/hg2tg-1024x589.png\" alt=\"Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Entry 9472659\" class=\"wp-image-26922\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/05\/hg2tg-1024x589.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/05\/hg2tg-600x345.png 600w, https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/05\/hg2tg-768x442.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/05\/hg2tg-900x518.png 900w, https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/05\/hg2tg.png 1257w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Entry 9472659<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Against all probability, a sperm whale had suddenly been called into existence several miles above the surface of an alien planet.<\/p><p>And since this is not a naturally tenable position for a whale, this poor innocent creature had very little time to come to terms with its identity as a whale before it had to come to terms with not being a whale any more.<\/p><p>This is a complete record of its thoughts from the moment it began its life to the moment it ended it.<\/p><cite><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy<\/a> entry #9472659<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The 1980s TV series illustrates this with an excerpt from the guide in which the whale is shown dropping from 474km above the surface of the planet.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Whale and the Bowl of Petunias\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/THSY7-CxKnQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is problematic for a number of reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>474km is approximately 300 miles, which is rather more than \u201cseveral miles\u201d.&nbsp;<\/li><li>We don\u2019t know a lot about the size and atmospheric composition of Magrathea but (as I will discuss below) we have good reason to believe that it is similar to that of Earth. If that is the case the Whale would have appeared in the Thermosphere, where it would have either asphyxiated or had its air-filled lungs explode.<\/li><li>The average speed of its descent would have been 12,000 mph and it would have burned up on reentry to the lower atmosphere.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Since we know <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/quotes\/198068-another-thing-that-got-forgotten-was-the-fact-that-against\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">every single thought that crosses the whale\u2019s mind during its brief existence<\/a>, and that none of those thoughts is consistent with a mammal experiencing hypersonic reentry from the Thermosphere, we can safely conclude that the figure of 474km is one of many &#8220;wild inaccuracies&#8221; that The Hitchhiker\u2019s Guide is famous for. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The purpose of this blog is to reconstruct the unfortunate whale&#8217;s last moments using computational fluid dynamics and to answer the following important questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>How far did the whale actually fall during its 90 seconds of existence?<\/li><li>What was its speed of impact with the ground?<\/li><li>How big would the resulting impact crater have been?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">a very <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/surprise?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#surprise<\/a>(ing) entrance to the universe for the Magrathean sperm whale (less surprising for the bowl of petunias, apparently) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/pixel_dailies?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#pixel_dailies<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Pixel_Dailies?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@Pixel_Dailies<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/pixelart?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#pixelart<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1crQIjPqc7\">pic.twitter.com\/1crQIjPqc7<\/a><\/p>&mdash; scribble (@scrixels) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/scrixels\/status\/1031915581493190656?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">August 21, 2018<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Assumptions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We know little about the ancient planet Magrathea, however in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_(radio_series)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">radio series<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_(novel)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">book<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_(TV_series)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TV series<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_(film)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">film <\/a>adaptions of the story, the crew of the Heart of Gold visit the planet\u2019s surface. One of those crew members is Arthur Dent, who is visiting an alien world for the first time. Since he requires no breathing apparatus and walks out of the spaceship and onto the plant in a normal manner. From this, we can conclude that (1) Magrathea has an Earth-like atmosphere and (2) that the gravitational acceleration is broadly similar to that on earth.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have assumed that <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sperm_whale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the sperm whale is of average size,<\/a> about 16 metres long and with a mass of 4100 kg and is spontaneously created in a horizontal alignment, with its belly facing the surface of the planet.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In most dramatisations of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, the Whale\u2019s internal dialogue lasts for about 90 seconds, which we will use as its total lifespan, and thus the total duration of the simulation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All simulations were performed using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/global\/en\/products\/simcenter\/STAR-CCM.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Simcenter STAR-CCM+<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"537\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/05\/whale_tunnel_freefall-1024x537.png\" alt=\"CFD Simulation of a Sperm Whale in Freefall\" class=\"wp-image-26916\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/05\/whale_tunnel_freefall-1024x537.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/05\/whale_tunnel_freefall-600x314.png 600w, https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/05\/whale_tunnel_freefall-768x403.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/05\/whale_tunnel_freefall-900x472.png 900w, https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/05\/whale_tunnel_freefall.png 1408w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Simcenter STAR-CCM+ simulation of a sperm whale plummeting to its death<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. What was the sperm whale&#8217;s speed of impact?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The simulations predict that (if it maintains a horizontal attitude) the sperm whale would reach a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Terminal_velocity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">terminal velocity<\/a> of about 178.3 m\/s&nbsp; (about 400 mph) after about 40s of freefall, which represents its speed of impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"339\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/gOXI63aN6uykeZ58MsdO19y3tuMj-wKhPud6dirhVwPThdVL2d2Te3oSP9ciImtA8QKAGrJryLe7Xdw20btvjKzFDZX2slChu3rz44T3uw4n8yR7RsLM6_qjCNGjgJJXnaa9XPDn\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Travelling at a speed of Mach 0.5, it is likely that the whale would have suffered severe burning from aerodynamic heating. In the picture above the red areas on the sides of the whale illustrate the regions of maximum skin friction. Since the whale seems to be unaware of any discomfort, it is entirely possible that the period of heating was so small that the burning did not become enough of an issue to worry the whale during its final moments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. How far did the whale fall?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the simulation, an averaged sized sperm whale would fall about 14 km) in 90 seconds. This distance of about 8.75 miles sounds credibly like the \u201cseveral miles above the surface\u201d described by the Hitchhikers Guide. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/hySN8WShu2hrGpsuXJrQZOuMC2WfIM1AAsjXrsetDl4wlXC6hlk3jj_qt3sC3ValiJ2gjWm3dWhEBZbFhl1zyJAiZtorWFBUVhaWsohwl2Yp72iYRpuvBDfkbEGe2zw_9PAfxjD8\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At an altitude of about 45,000 feet, it\u2019s likely that any air-breathing mammal would suffer from extreme hypoxia, although that might explain the euphoric tone of the whale&#8217;s internal musings. However, such is the speed of its descent that the whale would rapidly reach the lower reaches of the atmosphere at which the oxygen saturation is much higher. However, breathing at 400 mph might represent a challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is about the altitude of a commercial airliner on earth, and an altitude easily attainable by a surface to air nuclear missile, which was the whale&#8217;s previous form of existence (before the emergency activation of the Infinite Improbability Drive), which offers further validation of the accuracy of this prediction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. How big was the impact crater?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Travelling at 178.3 m\/s a 41,000 kg whale has an impact energy of 651888 kJ which is equivalent to the energy of  0.16 tons of TNT.  Given that <a href=\"https:\/\/graphics.reuters.com\/LEBANON-SECURITY\/BLAST\/yzdpxnmqbpx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mk-82 500 lb bomb<\/a> delivers about 0.1 tons of damage and destruction, we can expect that the whale impact is about 60% more destructive than this: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/05\/bomb.jpg\" alt=\"Impact of a single Mk-82 500llb bomb\" class=\"wp-image-26931\" width=\"846\" height=\"558\"\/><figcaption>Impact of a single Mk-82 500llb bomb<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. What about the bowl of petunias?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Curiously enough, the only thing that went through the mind of the bowl of petunias as it fell was Oh no, not again.
