{"id":252,"date":"2019-06-25T08:52:17","date_gmt":"2019-06-25T15:52:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.plm.automation.siemens.com\/t5\/Simcenter-Blog\/Poorly-designed-pumps-use-10-of-world-energy\/ba-p\/604045"},"modified":"2026-03-26T06:03:18","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T10:03:18","slug":"poorly-designed-pumps-use-10-of-world-energy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/simcenter\/poorly-designed-pumps-use-10-of-world-energy\/","title":{"rendered":"Poorly designed pumps use 10% of world energy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Let\u2019s play a game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Count up all the pumps in your life: the pumps that operate your home HVAC system; oil pumps, water pumps, fuel pumps and aircon pumps in your car; the pump inside your expensive frothy coffee machine; the pump that provides pressure to your electric shower.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit\"><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-right\" style=\"width: 400px\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"PUMPS.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/PUMPS-1.jpg\" alt=\"PUMPS.jpg\" \/><\/span>It should be immediately obvious that each of us depends on multiple pumps in our everyday life, and for that to be the case, that t<strong>here are many more pumps than people in the world<\/strong> (without including all of the thousands of industrial pumps used in power generation, waste disposal, and manufacturing).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By some estimates, <strong>pumps account for over 10% of world energy consumption<\/strong>. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.grundfos.com\/water-energy\/meet-the-water-and-energy-challenge-now\/facts-about-pumps-and-sustainability.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">1<\/a>],[<a href=\"https:\/\/ieeexplore.ieee.org\/stamp\/stamp.jsp?arnumber=6408587\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">2<\/a>],[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/sites\/prod\/files\/2014\/05\/f16\/pump.pdf\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">3<\/a>].That\u2019s more than 2 TW-year of energy, just for pumps, more than the total of renewable power generation in the whole world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The vast <strong>majority of those pumps are poorly designed<\/strong> and inefficient. Traditionally, pumps have been treated as \u201coff the shelf\u201d items that are chosen to match the specific operating conditions under which a device is expected to perform. They rarely undergo detailed design analysis, as an isolated component or as part of a finely tuned system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This causes all sorts of problems; firstly systems rarely operate under the single design condition under which the pump was specced.
