Amidst this unfolding tragedy, this paints a picture of what our future can be if we decide to continue on the path to climate change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>It&#8217;s Not Easy Being Green<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The aviation industry is responsible for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atag.org\/facts-figures.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"12% of CO2 emissions from all sources of transport  (opens in a new tab)\">12% of CO2 emissions from all sources of transport <\/a>and its primary source is the gas turbine engine. It\u2019s no surprise then that jet engine performance is a key driver in the development of more fuel-efficient and environmentally-friendly aircraft. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Don&#8217;t Fail Me<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A second non-negligible factor is reliability. When the world recovers global air traffic will return and as always, aircraft will need to perform at peak performance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>Airlines are unwilling to get out of bed for anything less than \u201c99.5%\u201d dispatch reliability, says Clark: \u201cWe are not in a business to deal with aircraft that don\u2019t function properly.\u201d <\/em><\/p><cite>  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightglobal.com\/strategy\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-6-biggest-commercial-engine-manufacturers-\/134678.article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Flight Global<\/a> <\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>And one only needs to look at the delays currently to Boeing\u2019s 777X due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineering.com\/AdvancedManufacturing\/ArticleID\/19456\/Engine-Problems-Are-Holding-Back-Boeings-777X.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">the engineering challenges<\/a> of the biggest turbine engine ever built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Manufacturers can address these jet engine performance challenges with Simcenter. They work by taking air, cleaning, compressing and streamlining it, they deliver highly pressurized and heated air into the combustion chamber.  This, in turn, ensures a more efficient fuel burn. However, pressurization and heat lead directly to thermal and structural problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Whole Engine Vibration<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>For the engine to perform its primary function efficiently, delivering thrust, it needs to rotate vibration-free. If not, given the rotating speeds this could lead to catastrophic failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Component Structural Integrity &amp; Lifing<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Engine components operate in the harshest of environments, subject to thermal, structural &amp; rotational stresses and fatigue. In addition, they do not perform in one steady environment over the entire mission profile of the aircraft. For example, on a cold day with high air density at ground level, higher thrust is produced; however, on a hot day or at high altitude the situation is reversed. Furthermore, the engine isn\u2019t operating constantly 24\/7, rather it is subject to abrupt starts &amp; stops which will affect its overall life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How can these challenges be addressed?
