“And the Best Technical Paper award goes to … ”
Two weeks ago, at the Symposium on International Automotive Technology (SIAT) in Pune, India, Simcenter won awards for Best Technical Paper. Not one award, but two!
The SIAT conference is a forum for exchange of ideas and brainstorming focusing on the automotive industry, with participation of eminent worldwide experts – dixit the organization.

At Simcenter, it bursts of performance engineering experts for the automotive industry and logically, also our experts submit technical papers at this renowned conference. Considering that there were over 200 technical papers, winning the Best Technical Paper award is a great honor, but going home with 2 out of the 3 prizes, that is awe-inspiring.

2 papers. 2 prizes. But what was it about?
ADAS and Integrated Safety
The second prize for Best Technical Paper is related to radar-based ADAS solutions. Radar-based solutions are growing at a substantial rate and play a fundamental role in increasing passenger and pedestrian safety. This paper was co-authored with IDS Corporation and titled: “Physical and virtual testing synergic approach to ADAS radar performance verification and optimization”. It describes a methodology to support the whole design, optimization and verification cycle, starting from the stand-alone radar antenna performance up to in-car installed radar operational performance verification.
From the characterization of vehicle signatures to the validation of the radar in a test environment.
During the presentation, the link was made with bats. Yes, bats. Bats use echolocation – the active use of sonar to ‘see’ using sound. Doing so, they detect obstacles in flight, find their way and forage foods. Spooky and brilliant creatures. Unlike sonar, radar-based solutions need a synergic approach based on both numerical modelling and measurement and integrate this into a single process. Want to know how?

NVH & Acoustics of an electric motor
The third prize for Best Technical Paper was awarded to our vibro-acoustic performance solutions for electric motors. It is commonly known that an electric motor has a lower overall noise emission compared to an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE). With no masking noise form the engine, road noise and wind noise become more prominent. And new noises come to play, such as the high-pitched tonal noise of the electric motor.
Whereas the paper was all about simulating upfront in the design process, we demonstrated on the SIAT booth how to accomplish the validation through testing.
The paper “Vibro-Acoustic Analysis of a Permanent Magnet Machine for Electrical Vehicles” aims to reduce cabin noise originating from the electric motor to increase overall driver and passenger comfort. In this paper, electric motor noise is assessed and optimized early on in the design process and illustrated on a brushless Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM) which is widely used in electrical vehicles. And the first prize?
The first prize was awarded to the Automotive Research Association of India or ARAI. The title of the paper goes as follows “Development of Diesel-Ethanol Engine for HCV”. It focuses on heavy-duty vehicles for which diesel engines still offers a better fuel economy than other powertrain architectures.
