Siemens Wins MESA Smart Story Award for Manufacturing

By Elisabeth

MESA International, the Manufacturing Enterprise Solutions Association, recently announced that Siemens won its Smart Story Award contest for their paper Defining Closed-Loop Manufacturing: Using Manufacturing Operations Management to Power Smart Manufacturing. The paper discusses how to create a digital infrastructure that harnesses manufacturing data and employs it to boost both efficiency and quality.

The MESA readership decides on the winners – the stories that garner the broadest readership.

Interest in the Siemens story speaks to the challenges that many manufacturers are facing as they embark on their digital transformation journey. This journey requires careful planning: Even before all the components of a manufacturer’s digitalization infrastructure have been developed, the company must define goals and build an operational architecture that includes existing and new solutions. A robust infrastructure architecture must anticipate new equipment, systems, information, connections and participants that are not yet available or defined.

Siemens’ paper explains what manufacturers should be anticipating as participants in the digital industrial revolution – that is, Industry 4.0, the Internet of Things (IoT) or the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) – and what they should do now to capture the advantages this new era promises. It goes on to explore the many disciplines involved in this transformation, ultimately focusing on the center of the new digital infrastructure, manufacturing operations management (MOM). The paper looks at MOM within the overall architecture, as well as the requirements for closing the loop in the Digital Enterprise.
